Private schools look better for one very simple reason. They can ignore the idiots and selectively remove anybody who is seriously under performing.
If your kid is lagging behind the Down Syndrome kids on his marks. He might just have trouble learning, he's a quiet and good kid. He won't last 1 year in a private school because he'll need "specialist" education that this school doesn't offer. Bye, don't let the door hit you on the way out !
What a load of crap!!! Some schools may work that way, but generally, the private schools do provide more specialist education than the public system. The troublemakers get dealt with in the private system far more effectively than in the public system. A ratbag in a public class is usually dealt with by ignoring the rest of the class, in the private system, said ratbag is removed from the room and sent to the principal's office.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

The ratbag is removed from the school Isemmens. That's my point.
You assume the ratbag is reformable. I can assure you that the private school I went to and the ones my friends went to quickly dispatch dumb kids that are not already conforming.

They also select students based on two things. Ability to pay the fees and you might have noticed that there is a rather easy aptitude test when you want to send your idiot child to a private school?
"Oh it just helps us grade them appropriately."
    means
"It helps us identify complete idiots that we think will drag the mean down."

You might have also noticed some private schools have scholarships. What sort of people do you think send their kids to these events?
Parents that want their kids to go there and can afford to send them there. A genius from Mt Doitt doesn't bother with Trinity college. They're easily picked up by government selective schools based on merit.
So the intelligence of the plebians is harvested for the school and "invites" are sent out to the parents of kids that did well.
If your kid is an idiot, you don't get that invite. This is 100% cooking the books and most private schools do it and they would be crazy not to.

Some schools. Ha, not MOST private schools work like that. They do not take in a group of students and make all or most of those students above average.
They take a group of students most of who are already above average and give them a slightly better chance to improve slightly.

But to be fair, there are SOME schools which don't care that your kid is an idiot. They actually prefer it. These schools are known as "religious" private schools.
While they like smart kids, they will take anybody because idiots are easily coached in the ways of the religion or their parents are easily persuaded to participate because the idiot child won't do so well elsewhere.

I have also seen private schools choose students by community selection. You need a referral from somebody who has children at the school or was a former student of the school.
This is also sometimes are requirement for schools like Kings school. It keeps the riff raff out and maintains an image the school wants.

One of my friends from school had two brothers in Kings School and he was not accepted. "We have already exceeded our class sizes for this year."
Despite doing the aptitude test and having been on the waiting list for years. Guess who was not the smartest brother in the family?

Private schools are a waste of money. They offer no benefit to students other than removing the bruised fruit from the basket. They offer dumb rich parents false hope that they can give their children a better chance.
It's the placebo effect for intelligence. Sending me to James ruse high school (the top school) would never have improved my HSC results. The learning environment does not make smarter. It only gives you a slightly better chance.
In the case of James Ruse, it allows very smart kids to be free of really smart kids dragging them to an A grade with their stupid time wasting questions on differential polynomial calculus because they didn't get it first time around.

Students will do a lot better at school if their parents or guardians spend a lot of time coaching them personally. Tutors are not very effective unless you want your child to game a particular selective exam.

My Math's teacher used to come up with some classic one liners.
One day she snapped. "God you lot are stupid. Lets just face it, you're never going to understand this stuff, so we'll just triage what's left of your intelligence and hope it's enough to get you through life."

Or as I like to put it. You can't polish a turd, but you can roll it in glitter!

My kids are now at school. I have an open invitation from my old schools to send my children there. (They want the publicity of satisfied customers). It's amusing how many second generation children don't go there.
If you offered to pay all of my children's costs to send them to the same private school or any of the others in the area I would refuse. I honestly believe the public schools in the area offer much better opportunities.
Of course many of them are selective and many of the others have a good reputation. (Better than the private schools).

However. If you gave me the choice of some of those public schools (the crappy ones) then I would choose the private school given reasonable costs.

My ex-wife believes (falsely) that private schools are better. She went to a public school and has a Utopian view of private schools. She does not know her glasses are rose coloured.
I went to both. Her impressions of public schools are correct. Her impressions of private schools are not.
She sent our son to a private school. He did ok. But the school had it's own religious agenda and it was not long before the boy started to exceed his programming.
I'm not sure what happened, but I suspect that the ex realised the private school was not as good as they claimed. She moved him to a public school.
He's a clever kid. I think he's smarter than I was at that age. Though my parents seem to think he's better at his school work. I was better at pulling teachers down. To be fair, my teachers were in fact idiots in primary school and it wasn't hard.
But what everybody has noticed is that his is doing a LOT better at public school than private school.

Yes, I put it down to religious subversion of the private school. But then.... I would say that. I might have a slight bias towards that kind of moron.
I do know that my ex now does not see the value in private schools below high school level. I'm yet to convince her of that for high schools, but I suspect she suspects they are not as good as everybody claims.

If you're kid is going to pop 300 in the HSC in a public school, you're delusional to think they're going to do better than 350 in a private school. It's a 10% improvement for a lot of money.

Yes I am an agent of Satan, but my duties are largely ceremonial.

Having gone to both, that kinda sums it up.............................
The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.

Pretty simple really, private schools should be privately funded, save the public funds for public schools.

Agree, bob . And at the same time reduce tax amount by the public education portion people who send their kids to private schools have to pay.
