Was legend in my day growing up....
Christmas Day afternoon spent watching Endless Summer with a full belly.
Then went on to make On Any Sunday.....

    Aaah .... shame...

Was a waxhead..The Endless Summer was the sh*t. Saw it more times than Woodstock which is really saying something.

And although I never got the bike bug, On Any Sunday was a cracker too.

    R.I.P.

On Any Sunday was my movie back then and to watch Steve McQueen who I read many years later financed it ride along with his mates was bliss.
I cant think who the other rider who was with McQueen now but when I did a Google on the story some years ago, I found he was still alive, riding and selling bikes......
I was never into Surfing but the Endless Summer fitted in nicely at the time and then when he re-visited all those locations some 20 years later, it brought all those memories of that era back to me.
My Condolences to his Family and his legion of Friends around the world.

    UPDATE...................
Malcolm Smith was the other who featured in On Any Sunday, a brilliant rider who won many competitions mostly on Motorcycles that were not intended to go where he took them.
To me it seemed that On Any Sunday was the transition from riding a road type motorcycle as a means of transport to developing the then fledgling sport of Motor Cross/Endurance riding that saw a whole new breed of Motorbikes and the way to ride them being developed.

I remember seeing this at a Sunday midnight viewing, at Long Jetty (NSW Central Coast ), on a long weekend.

Ah !!! My my Surfing years. Started with a 9'6" Keyo when everyone else was riding larger boards.

9'6"??? Ok, well without knowing your age you HAVE to be older than me....

Mine was a 6' Cordingly in 1970....and they were getting shorter.

Yes, a little older than you and started surfing in 1965.
I started at an earlier age than you.

I did end up with a 5'11'' but found it was useless with a small surf.
Went back and could still "Hang Ten" on a two foot wave while the guys with the short boards were sitting on the beach.
    Ah ! Bateau Bay Beach.

I wonder if the popularity of the movies had more to do with portraying a lifestyle, that was mostly out of reach for the average teenager of the time, than a genuine interest in surfing or bike riding? Similar to the Woodstock movie. The thing is, back then, many Aussie teenagers idolised everything American and, the idea of being free to travel and do as they pleased, and hence these movies fulfilled both criteria of being American and representing a free utopian lifestyle. The Beachboys music was pretty popular at the time as well, even if none of The Beachboys actually surfed. But yes, a sad thing, Bruce Brown's passing

The Aussie movie, "Morning of the Earth" was my favourite of the genre, with Aussie music and especially the title track, by G. Wayne Thomas. Second would be the 1971 movie about Woodstock. That's because I was more into the music than surfing or motor bikes though.
