    Default Short Term Rego

Looks like VicRoads is starting to catch up with the rest of the world, even if its 30 years late!

From 1 Jan 2018 you can choose 3month, 6month or 12 Month Rego terms for certain vehicles.

If u want to go on an expedition get a Land Rover, if u want to come home from an expedition get a Landcruiser!

France have offered 1 Day Rego for over 25 years now!
Great if you have a Motorhome in storage.

A mate has been trying to tell me, you can get 1 Day Rego in the NT?
Doesnt sound right to me, anyone here from the NT or know about this?

You can get one day rego here too...
They are called 'Unregistered Vehicle Permits'.

I think all states/territories have some form of this.

It's not actually registration, just a permit to relocate an unregistered vehicle eg: to a repairer to have work performed in preparation for registration, etc.

Same with trailers.... even a new one. So you can legally tow it on public roads to a registration centre, etc.

With the shorter term rego, it costs more compared to 12 months in a single payment, but it will help those who can't afford the lump sum all at once.

A couple of weeks ago I bought a new car in Ulladulla. The dealer arranged a two day permit to drive from NSW to the ACT for proper regisration.

Oh, i thought it was actual short term rego, so you could just rego a bike for 3 months over summer for example
If its nothing more than installments, what a joke and waste of time

You don't need a permit for that in NSW.

There is such a thing as seasonal rego, typically aimed at farmers who only need to move certain pieces of machinery during certain seasons. Can be used for holiday gear, too, I believe. Then you also have (can't recall what they call it now) a rego for older collectable cars which permits them to be driven on the roads for an agregate of three months (or thereabouts) in any year.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

Here it's called 'Special Interest' rego which is mostly for vintage cars, they get a 'SI-xxxx' number plate.
The vehicle has to be 30+ years old to qualify for it.

We always get the option here on all rego renewals for 6 or 12 months (just tick the appropriate box)

Got a mate with an immaculate GT Falcon. He only registers it over the summer, and stores it the rest of the time.

I use short rego to space out the cars. So I registered the new Commodore for 6 months to a) Clear xmas and b) Put it almost opposite to the other car over a year. Then it's 12 months.

Yeah, I know mate, but I needed one for the ACT....

F*ck, I even had to put a new car over the pits because it wasn't sold here. ANOTHER f*ckin cocks*ckin fee....not happy but it is what it is.

I thought NSW only had half Yearly payments on the Rego for the general public despite saying they were considering making 3 monthly Rego available but if that was introduced, its only available to those in the Motor Industry.
It was my understanding the ACT has always had one of the most rigorous inspections for motor vehicles by putting them 'Over the Pits' at Govt run Inspection stations.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

Not for many years Gordon. Was once annually, but now you need just a roadworthy when it transfers to someone. When it's new, no inspection is needed (unless like me, you buy it over the border) or when any car transfers to ACT rego. They check it and make sure all the numbers match. Random on road inspections are supposed to be the go now, but I haven't seen one of those in years either.

Rego is for 3, 6 or 12 months.

    You can....

Stupid system if you ask me, now there is 3 times more options to forget to pay and get a $750 fine for being un-reg...
Anyone that cant pay rego in one hit, shouldn't be owning a vehicle.

Then again, i look at the road bike, probably had 16 rides in 4 years, thats $2400 for 16 rides!!!
WHEN YOU LOOK AT IT THAT WAY...... You wanna sell it

Sorry, I was being a smart arse

Cranbourne is a south eastern suburb of Melbourne that is basically full of bogans who drive Commodores. Even the ones with jobs. A mates cousin who lives there has spent about 200k on Commodores in the last decade....which is probably half his wage.

Many "Cranbournians" also drive Commodores that are unregistered and have no number plates. They also now have Sudanese bogans moving to the area, however they just prefer to steal their neighbours Commodore rather than buying their own. Good thinking.

I would have to disagree with that. So the poor should not be allowed to own a car ? An aged pensioner couple is on about 20k a year.
