    Default Real NBN download speed

It seems that we are all pre-occupied with our OOKLA results ...

How does that speed translate to real download speed/time?

I am looking for someone to compare download time for this .pdf file at a mutually agreeable time when the kiddies are home from school - I am on ADSL. The file size is 20.6MB and is the ODROID magazine for December, 2017.

If Australia is a democracy why, then, is voting compulsory?

downloading something from a certain site means jack comparing adsl v fiber etc
because it is all about what the speed from the server you are downloading from
that determines how long it will take.

i just downloaded 2 files at the same time 1 was a 390 meg file and your file, your file
finished about 20 seconds quicker than the 390 meg file

And to add to that, you need to have your modem plugged in to the device you are using for the speedtest to get an accurate speed. And of course it depends on the speed package you are on.

What you are saying is that the download time will be the same regardless of ADSL or fibre? If that is the case why bother with fibre?

Which seems to put the lie to the statement that it doesn't matter whether ADSL or fibre.

That is exactly why I made my original request.

Obviously it is going to take me longer on 25 than fandtm666 on 100. Real comparisons are difficult unless real conditions are the same and generally a test of something in Australia is a more realistic than something in the US. The server speed as mentioned by fandtm666 does also come in to it, its just another of the many factors. If ADSL was just as fast as the NBN, then we would be rolling out ADSL

Speedtest is a realistic test as long as you use it correctly. Selecting the same server and testing it at different times can show you if a particular provider has issues, particularly on the NBN in peak time with not enough allocated bandwidth.

I am surprised that there doesn't appear to be anyone on the forum prepared to time the download of the .pdf document mentioned.

I know it is voluntary ...

I know that there will be a 20.6MB file that may or may not be of interest ...

ok for 1 that file is way to small but it took me about 6-8 seconds to download

so pick a bigger file and a program that will give you a time taken etc and ill
    play your game

It just took me 25 seconds to download on NBN Satellite BB with a max download speed of 25Mb/s & while the missus is on the other PC FarceBooking.

here is a snip I mapped for you of the speed while it DL'd.

    Cheers, Tiny

@fandtm666, That is what I was expecting i.e. a time almost too short to be measurable.

@Tiny, How did you get that "snip"?

That is a good indication but I was hoping that "someone" on the NBN and myself on ADSL would press the download button at the same, more or less, time and then time the download.

I was further hoping that it would be when the kiddies are out of school.

P.S. The area is going to have a power outage between 10:00 and 15:00 today. Expected maximum of 43C.

it's easy, just bring up Task Manager, select Performance Tab, select WiFi or Ethernet (depending on your connection), that monitors your throughput speed.
When you select the download file it records your speed.
As soon as it finishes download I clicked on the snipping tool & new button (I have it on my taskbar at the ready), that freezes the screen, select the screen area to snip then save it as to where you like.
I'm using W10, not sure if all previous Win versions will give you the throughput graph or have snipping tool as accessory, pretty sure Win8 had it.
BTW: the throughput speed in task bar is accurate, I think, as it matches the test speeds with OOKLA Speedtest exactly on my setup.
    Cheers, Tiny

I run Linux so I will have to check if something similar is available.

Interestingly clicking on my link above now gives a file size of 3.3MB????? EDIT: What was your file size?

For the record my download was almost instantaneous.

Hmm! that's weird, the original file was 21MB yet today it is 3.3MB yet both copies are 28 pages with pics & nothing appears to be missing.
& yes almost instantaneous for me now.

Do you think its possible that your Computer has cached this file which is why it now appears so small and has a faster download?

I have felt many programs get stored away 'For Ron' if its accessed more than once and not all are fully deleted despite all efforts short of replacing the HD?
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

No, the actual file size has changed; as the first file was downloaded to my lap top & the second file was downloaded to a different PC.
The 2 files are totally separate, so the website has resized/compressed the original file.

No. On my machine links like the one I posted get downloaded to the /tmp directory. As the name suggests when I shut down the machine all files in that directory are deleted.
