You havent said if this is channel specific or on all HD channels.
Has your friend done a rescan of channels just in case the Broadcaster(s) have changed anything and his set hasnt 'updated' itself as not all sets will do it automatically.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

If this issue is recent (say last few days) then do a re-scan.
There should be no changes to broadcast.
Otherwise this is older TV and tuner card will not decode H264 Mpeg4 (HD Channels).
Broadcasts changed to this HD channels many years ago.
If this TV is one of those old sets you will need a new HD FTA set top box or similar.

I've done a rescan a number of times. It's all HD channels which are affected

I'm sure I had been watching HD on the TV a while ago. It's weird that It's picking up the audio part of the frequency package

In my area, (Orange/Dubbo) the only changes made in recent months was PRIME adding 7flix and I think the ABC moved a HD channel to another.
Now 7Flix is an MPEG 4 HD channel which none of my TV's can receive along with all the other HD channels
Have you tried to Google LG and go on their site and see if you can get a user manual along with the specs to see if the tuner is able to receive MPEG 4 broadcasts.
If it is, Then Hogwart, you have a Problem !!!!

I downloaded the user manual & couldn't find reference to frequencies. I'll have a more thorough search tonight.

Given its age, I suspect it doesn't have an MPEG4 compatible tuner, which most of the HD channels are now encoded in.

Audio and no picture is a common sign that this may be the issue.

How long ago was it working OK on HD channels?

If it does have an HD tuner, perhaps it's only capable of MPEG2 HD.

It's possible it may just require a firmware update to decode MPEG4, which you install via a USB stick, but you will need to get LG support to email the file to you.

    LG Support 1300 LG CARE (1300 54 2273)

    Email via the website.

You can even have an online chat via the website.

I haven't been in the TV game for a few years now, but from memory that model had a firmware update to fix a issue with MPEG2 HD. I no longer have any of the firmware updates, sorry to say.

The update was done using an older computer with a serial port via a null modem cable.

I would just go out and purchase a cheap STB that does MPEG4 and forget about the internal tuner.

Agreed, that would be the simplest (and guaranteed) solution.

I also have an older LG Plasma - can still pick up some HD channels but is not MPEG 4 compatible so any channel that has changed to MPEG4 the LG cannot receive the channel eg Flix.

However all the main networks still have non Mpeg 4 channels so all the main channels can still be received.

Each of the Broadcasters run all their main channels programs in SD BUT there are five or so channels that are exclusively broadcast in MPEG4 format ONLY.
There is a bit of a bonus in buying a STB is that you can now use it to record programs onto a USB device.
I know most TV's allow recording but you have to leave the TV on and of course while your recording, you cant watch anything else.

"7 Flix" the "Racing" and some of the shopping SD channels were from day one MPEG 4 H264.. If these don't work it means you TV Tuner doesn't support MPEG 4 H264. In the passed 2 years the broadcasters upgraded their HD's to H264. There's no software fix, This is a hardware limitation. Around $40 will buy you a set top box. If it was me, I would put the 300 watt LG Plasma out to pasture and treat yourself to a new 60 watt LCD Android TV when boxing day sales starts. With the saving you make on your electricity bill you'll probably get your money back in couple of years anyway.

I'm with you on her upgrading to lcd. Her plasma's on the way out with a thin pink line on the screen. Any advice on TV replacement. I've a Hisense (cheapish)but I'm not happy with it.

The worse part in looking for replacement is that none of the showrooms are anything like where the TV is going to be for the next several years.
MOST stores today have the sets tuned in and working well but I have seen those where either by ignorance, Don't Care or DELIBERATELY set up badly because they were pushing an other dearer brand!!!
Look at the warranty and remember if repairs are needed, YOU may have to transport it to a repairer if your 'out of Town'.
