Default slow international speeds ???? anyone else

before i put in a support ticket just wanted to see if anyone
    is suffering slow intentional speeds.

i have tested servers in the usa - uk and holland with very slow speeds
25Mb or less and as for uploads well dial up speeds come to mind.

I tried to set up my own Speedwave without much success 🙂 I have FTTN which I'm getting approx 35 Mbps down and 21 Mbps up.
    But individually I got these (remember I'm in tassie);

    New York - Ping 239 ms - Down 34.1 Up 21.3
    London - Ping 316 ms - Down 26.8 Up 17.4
    Utrecht - Ping 418 ms - Down 16.8 Up 17.7
    Sydney - Ping 34ms - Down 34.4 Up 21.0

Looks like I am about the same, I just did a quick one to the US and got 28/5 with a ping of 208, local as fast as ever.

but there has been no mention of it anywhere.

Sucks whats the use of decent speeds when all you get is adsl

I had a look over at Whirlpool before I posted earlier and was surprised to see nothing mentioned.

I have not tested any international speeds since I joined ABB, so have no idea what the usual is.

International speeds will always be considerably slower than speeds within Australia due to overseas local demand, which among other things, will be linked to time of day in the overseas target location.

Out of interest, I did a speed test to both UK and USA a few minutes ago and it is much the same as it has been on other occasions when I have checked, although it is perhaps a little slower than usual.

In any case, it seems logical to expect that overseas bandwidth demand will be higher at present due to the holiday season. Obviously, population density versus infrastructure will play a significant part in other parts of the world. (Australian population density is low when compared to Europe, UK and USA.

Yes i do understand that but this only started over the weekend and has continued
the reason i have noticed is because a site i use i have consistently gotten between 40-60 Mb downloads
and at the moment it is at 7-8Mb.

When i first got my nbn with ABB i did the same tests and was getting between 65-80Mbfrom NYC etc.

I have just had a look at whirlpool and have actually found a thread with others that have had
    issues with wideband international speeds

I hope you realize that Telstra is the cause of all this as abb uses them for international traffic. And good luck trying to get an answer from Telstra or a fix they just don't care.
Also, i read somewhere that the underground cable to Singapore was badly damaged and they were fixing it. That cable is supposed to speed up our international speeds.
My rsp uses Vocus and to be honest I haven't seen any slower international speeds than normal.
Might because I'm used to the way we run our NBN that I don't expect anything better.

Jesus christ, what a pile of dribble.

If you want to just spew anti Telstra anti government crap, Google leftists R us or something. This is a technology section, not a dribble section.

If Telstra had an international traffic problem, 75% of Australia would be screaming. And as I have recently connected 2 friends to Telstra FTTN, I would be hearing about it. As would the Telstra forum on Whirlpool.

The cable damage was over a month ago and only affected latency, not speed.

Interesting to see that Telstra, who apparently don't care but run the best NBN service, are partners in building a new cable connecting us.

Just out of interest fandtm666, still slow for me as well.

    All pings are 200+

    Bali I got a pair of 3's
    Singapore 40 and 7
    Jakarta 53 and 6
    San Francisco 46 and 9
New York City 40 and 9

They seem to be better than what you posted at Whirlpool, what time of the day were you getting all those bad results ?

They have not addressed my complaint. They state they aim to address it within 5 days and resolve it within 10 business days. I left after 10 business days.

I have no problem with their service at all, speeds were rock solid and reliable, if anything they were higher in peak period. Would I recommend them ? Yes, if you are happy with a minimum speed service......which is what they are giving FTTN/FTTB customers by stealth.

My complaint is they will only give you 25/5 if you are on FTTN. They do not advise you of this in their CIS (Critical Information Summary), and speeds change during sign up. If they offered 100/40, or even 50/20 I would still be there.

I cancelled my paypal authorisation to them, and if they want to carry on, I am happy to make a TIO complaint which I would win based on their CIS.

I am assessing ABB for 2 months on 100/40 and taking advantage of their free second month offer and will decide then whether to stay or go back to Telstra on a 2 year contract.

well the fella at whirlpool from ABB has been helpful and changed my ip 3 times
but to no avail same crap speed overseas. See how it goes because he said they
are looking into it and if its not fixed ill walk the plank elsewhere.

be interesting if others who are not with ABB and have a 100/40 connection
could do the speed test to new york and post the result they have to have a 100 / 40
connection because anything less will not show what i could achieve.

Pointless diatribe ranting that contains no facts will always get the reply it deserves. Maybe you could use your internet connection to look up some facts rather than just posting garbage.

Mr Telstra, hey I must have forgotten to sign up with them, after all this an Aussie Broadband thread and I am their customer.

Just to rule anything else out.........I wonder whether us having the same modem has anything to do with it ?

I had woeful speeds until I selected 802.1Q. I wonder if there is possibly anything else ?

I reckon it might be worth a search of Whirlpool to see if there is anything in the Asus modem threads, given that you have already taken it up with ABB.

Also, what particular speed test are you using to New York ? For example, what are you getting for New York City AT&T ? I get the following :

Ping 223, 21.92 Down , 12.35 Up. I am connected via Wireless, not Ethernet on 5.8 ghz.

Also, do you have another modem to test ?

I could connect the Belong modem tomorrow and see what it says. It could at least rule an Asus problem out.
