Ah! But WhiteOx, you WERE lying. I generally string 'em along and then drop in a word like LINUX which also scares 'em off. (and I'd be lying, too 'cause none of my machines are running Linux)
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

What is wrong with you people? You have no creativity. Have you not read my previous posts on this subject?
I just searched for some... hmmm... can't find them.

OK... first thing.. whistles and loud noises DO NOT work on phone lines and they never have. Phone calls are quantised and compressed.
Loud sounds only get distorted, they don't effect anybody. Though Telecom used to have a device called a "howler". It was designed to get a person's attention so they would hang up a phone.
But that would only work on the local loop.

Anyhow, I used to have a landline bundled with my ADSL. I didn't want it, I didn't need it and didn't want to pay for it.
So I put it to good use. I connected a phone to it and made it unlisted. I also put it on the DNC list. I also gave the phone number to nobody. Even I didn't know it.

So... if it rang, "SCAMMER ALERT!" --- LET THE GAMES BEGIN!

At first I lacked a bit of creativity. I used to just see how long I could fvck them around.
Then I would try and infuriate them with my incompetence. <indian accent> "What are you, some kind of retard?" MAHAHAHAHA .... No, but you must be for me fvck you up the arse for so long and you just took it like a bitch!"
If you can get them angry... this is awesome fun.

But then I got creative. Very creative. I learned a lot of them aren't Indian, but were Pakistanis. So I had a friend at work translate some phrases for me into Urdu.
I wrote them down phonetically. So I might have made some errors pronouncing the sentences, but that just makes them more fun.

It was no big deal to unplug the phone if I didn't want to be disturbed, but I'm a very disturbed person and I found it hard to leave it unplugged.

So a caller would ring in....
They would explain their situation ... "I am from microsoft and we have detected a virus on your computer!"
"Oh I'm so glad you guys rang, it's been running so slow I wasn't sure what was wrong. Thank you so much for calling me. Do you need my credit card details now or can I pay when we are finished?"
<I got really good at buttering their bread up front> If they said, "Oh, we can take your credit card details now if you like!"
.... "Oh sorry, my purse is in my car.... I'll have to go get it when we're finished." <the purse reference you expect a weird response for a guy, but they usually don't bite.>

So we get into the grit of it where they are trying to get a trojan onto your PC.
They're explaining things to you and all of a suddent I would slip in an Urdu phrase; "Would you like to see my penis?"
At first you will hear a slight pause and they will keep going. (You know you've got them at this point)
I've had some backup Hindi and Arabic phrases just in case.

They will continue on and try to ignore what you said, or you might think you didn't say it correctly. It doesn't matter, you're in their head.
A minute or two later, I let another one rip, "I want to fvck you up the arse!" or "Do you like shaved testicles?"
At this point, some of them can pretend to ignore you but most will lose it and ask angrily; "What did you just say?"
"Nothing, I heard somebody say something like it was a crossed line, but I'm not sure what it was?"
<they resume with their flow chart>
I let them have another one, "Put my balls in your mouth bitch and suck them!"

By this time, they will definitely lose their shit and start to abuse you.
Your laughter infuriates them even more.

A couple of time's I've had them say; "You are a very sick man!" and hang up.
One was a woman who I'm sure got an education they she will never get out of her head. She has images of horrible sexual acts in her head which I'm sure will come in handy later in life.

The number of scammers calling me over the years dropped off real fast after a while.
I might have hurt a few too many of them.

I had an Australian call me one day. He was collecting for a charity.
I hurt him. This guy had some psychological issues from ... well, years of exposure to people like him.
He just lit up my Machiavellian neurons like a Las Vegas casino.
I pushed him into a psychological tar pit and laughed as he struggled with his own demons dragging him under.

    ---

These days I've taken to hurting legit Indian call center workers.
The India economy is going to collapse under the weight of compulsory unionism by the time I've finished with it.
I plant earwigs in them. Ideas of how much they are being underpaid, over worked, under valued, hated by customers and managers.
Not the kinds of things that make them depressed and leaving them hanging from a bathroom door. The kinds of things that can only be cured with a running strike and a minor/moderate pay rise.

When you hear of a socialist revolution in India .... you know who is responsible for the civil unrest. <evil laugh>

Nearly positive personal information is being traded from the Telstra call centre in the Philippines. The recent callers from the Philippines have known my full name, and one slipped my model modem when I was leading him on about the number of lights on my modem. Too many coincidences that fall into line in last 3 weeks. Haven't called Telstra as it would be a waste of time.

I would tend to agree. For extra money, they sell your details.

Neighbours knocked on the door yesterday in a tizz, someone from Telstra was on the phone, some problem they wanted a password or something.

Yes, it happens regularly but its a first for them as they have a silent number. We all changed to NBN in the last month, they kept their phone number and asked to keep their silent listing.

Just going back to my previous advice, the app called HIYA is well worth installing on your phone.
My wife started getting calls from a strange number over the last 2 weeks, she answered a couple of times but no one was there. I installed Hiya and next time they range it came up as "Spammer" on the screen They are listed on Hiya's database.

Samsung now have Hiya's service embedded on their phones so you dont have to install it. Its brilliant.....and FREE.

Be warned, Hiya does not always tell you. I've been getting political calls in the last few days that come up as ordinary numbers.

Actually, they take it very seriously. But you have to have some good evidence, because without it, they're just pissing into the wind.

I'm evil, I'd milk them for information that you know they could not know and get as much information about them as possible.
Then report it to the TIO directly. Shit will rain from the sky like it was soaked in petroleum and on fire.

Of course, if you just wanted to be an arsehole, you'd find a niche media outlet like one of the talk back radio shows and "ask them for advice".
Shit will rain from the sky like the mothership from close encounters dumped it's septic tank.

Can you imagine what alien turds smell like? That's how horrible the situation would get

    Political calls from who ?

Hiya advises spammers and telemarketers, political calls are legit........to a degree.

See the bottom of this page as to what is/isnt allowed from political parties.

    Yes, political organisations and charities.
The call I had from "A charity" was the Australian caller. The very reason why I set upon the guy making the call and hurting him was because the charity ignored the DNC register.
"Oh we don't have to follow the DNC call register!"
Why do you think people are on the register, 'Because they do not want you to call them. They do not care who you are. You think you're above the law."
"No we do not, we are acting within the law."
Yes, you are acting within the law, but you still think you are above it. If you did not, you would say to yourself; "I will not call numbers on the register even though I know we can."
And the the argument went on and I dragged the guy into the political mud and made sure he was emotionally dirty and exhausted.

I get an occasional call for a local sheltered workshop partly because we once bought tickets from them for a Fund raiser..
Although we have declined to buy any more On-Line', they still call about once a month but the problem with them is they never ring before 5pm at Night which I thought late afternoon/evening calls was part of the DNC requirement.

Trash, I was under the impression that this DNC register is purely voluntary for a company to join and there were virtually little or no 'Penalties' that could be imposed if a Company works 'outside' the agreement other than maybe having their membership cancelled if continual complaints are received about the Company.

Obviously the DNC register doesnt apply to Off Shore Callers.

A 'Wrong Number' (which does happen) is one thing but those calls made by these low life scum trying to rip you off are usually easy to tell apart as most are Asian or Filipino and they usually ask for either you personally by name or head of the household.

No, it's law. They must check the database before calling anybody.
Of course scammers are not really interested in following the law, so obviously the law cannot been forced upon them.

Charities and Political callers do not have to follow the DNC. But you would think calling people on the register is not a very effective way of getting money from them. They're likely to be pissed off (like I am) and more so if scammers have been calling them. They have a lot more to lose than gain by not checking the DNC.

If they had the numbers from Telstra they would also have your name, which they don't.
I get scammed more on the mobile, which has nothing to do with the NBN.
The good thing is I can block the number on my mobile in one second. On my wife's Samsung it is annoyingly complicated since the update.

It is also the mobile that I have used for signing up to stuff, although that is very rare.
Unfortunately I was so stupid a few years ago to get a Woolworths reward card. My wife did at the same time.
We both sometimes get spam calls from the same numbers. Lets ask Sherlock what he thinks about that.

However the NBN 'landline' is now getting more attention lately.
Therefore another thing I suspect are Android apps that read your contacts list like Viber, Whatsapp, and a bazillion more.
You don't even have to be a Viber user but your number is on somebody's phone who is(like your daughter) and bazinga, they have a bunch of new numbers to sell, including yours.

I usually see the number is a scam when it starts with an 8 after the state code.
I open the phone but say nothing if the caller is not in my list, usually it then disconnects on it's own after a few seconds but if I hear the Indian "hello" I just hang up and block the number. I have no time to waste even a word with these guys.
If I am in the mood I will double check with Reverse Australia but lately I don't even bother.

Got a call today which we didn't answer....

The number? 03941 that's it! That's all that showed. Haven't seen that before.
The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.

The joys on VoIP... Some dodgy o/s providers allow any number to be shown. In Australia (Australian Providers), it has to be a registered number to the owner
