    Default Spam - Scam callers

    Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone here knows of an app or something else that can be used in response to the spammers who ring at all times of day and night.

I would just love to be able to ring these bastards on their number which will tie their phone line up and stop them making any more nuisance calls.

My problem is the cost of doing this is prohibitive.

    ALSO

How do they get hold of my mobile number?

    Luv and kisses

If you've got the time, just string 'em along for as olong as you can, then put them on hold whilst you "consult"
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

Silly people think that NOBODY has their mobile nor their unlisted Landline number and are quite rattled when a happy Asian voice (Male or Female) from a Call Centre in Bullamakanka wants to sell them Solar Panels or fix their Computer.
I tried to trace an unusual number one day only to find it was a bundle of numbers that could ring OUT but not called back.
All leased by Telstra to these companies who I was told dont dial as such but as you hang up from one call, it automatically advances to next one.

I’ve cut it down to a dull roar by having an unlisted home number. When I see a number that I don’t know, I look it up on reverseaustralia.com.au. If it’s a known spammer, I add it to a blacklist in the phone, so it won’t ring if they call again. It’s surprising how many times they call back from the same number.

Ever since my phone changed to the NBN I've been getting like 6 a day. Got so pissed off I rang Telstra. They said even unlisted number can get nuisance calls, so since I have no friends or family overseas, all overseas calls are now blocked to my land line. It has dramatically cut back on the number of them now since most originate from India or Pakistan, but a few still get through (which they said would if they used internet to call or something).

Do the whistles and foghorns actually work? Somewhere in the back of my brain, there is something about noise clipping, and frequencies.
Seeing we are a technical forum, maybee some of our Telstra techs, or the modern equivalent could give an answer.

The old fashioned 'Posties Whistle' preferably with a 'Pea' inside works wonders.
You dont have to blow your lungs out to achieve a nice ear piecing sound to the caller because they are designed to give the maximum effect with little effort.

Remember that those calling from a Centre are most likely wearing a headset and THAT really makes a whistle even more effective.

    Hi all,

    Just a quick update

This is the number that has pissed me off 610 1177 2000 - can anyone here tell me where the hell this number originates ?

According to a Telstra techie I used to know (deceased) all calls are attenuated so you can blow your lungs out with a whistle or just fart the effect is the same to the listener.

My Samsung S8+ tells me when the caller is a spammer. It uses a built in app called hiya. Its on the Play Store as Hiya - Caller ID and Block.

I dont know if the app works as well/the same as whats built in to my phone, but its pretty good as far as I am concerned. Your phone rings, and if its a known Telemarketer number its comes up as "Spammer". You can then click on Block and never hear from them again.

Having said that, I had a very persistent one lately where it was basically the same number with a different last digit. They came up with 5 different ones, a Google showed it to be Crown Bet.

That group of numbers could be located anywhere and not even here in OZ.
The 'line' could come in from an O/Seas location and then be sent off to heaven knows where but set up in a way so it wont accept call backs or show on a display.
I think all the lines need to be numbered so they must start from 000-0000-0000 to 999 9999 9999.
I havent a clue how many numbers that makes available nor what combinations can be made out of them but I am sure its astronomical.

Next time you see an advisory of areas affected by storms and they list the blocks of numbers designated to that area, check it out.

I noted just how quickly the last 'Fix your Computer' called disconnected when I began to abuse him.
I had barely managed to tell him that he was a low life piece of shit for scamming people and he was GONE !!!

Problem is it is likely a VoIP service, so unlike the old days, you probably only tie up 0.1% of there lines and they continue on like nothing has happened. And there lies the other problem with VoIP - it is so easy to setup a war dialler, easier to get a phone number from anyway in the world, and even cheaper than it cost in your time for them to harass you. Won't be long until spamming phone calls are like spam emails and we have to waste time, energy and computing power to reduce the likeliness of getting these calls

Easy solution is to make the represented company responsible for any & all unwanted calls. For every number called that is on the DNC list then the company automatically gets a fine of 0.1% of their last years gross income. Similar for any calls outside of allowable hours.
Whilst not all of these calls are representing businesses as such, a lot are & the super harsh penalties will assist in stamping out these nuisance calls.

Similar penalties should apply for energy & telecoms companies who change people over without their permission.

This only works with On SHore companies who are registered but as most are located in places like Russia, the Philippines and India, policing them is almost impossible.
