    Default Looking for a nurse

I want to install a custom rom on my htc evo 3d because of the problems I'm getting with low memory caused by the provider's programs that I can't remove.
Saw a good vid on youtube instructing how to go about installing a custom recovery then installing a custom rom but they need to be specific to my phone x515m (he showed a samsung).
A visit to XDA developers proved pretty hopeless because of the intense jargon.
I was hoping someone who knows what they're doing wouldn't mind nursing me through it ? pretty please ?
I think all I need is help finding the right custom recovery and custom rom.

This is the vid I watched :

Loopyloo, surprised no one with more knowledge than i have not responded, think it is because you have to to go to xda developers and find your phone first. If you cannot find it you are in the poo, meaning no one is developing the soft ware for your phone. I have a Motorola that i have upgraded via computer link, but think the tutorial via direct link is the go. Don't be concerned about bricking your mobile as these tuts are very flexible and your mobile resilient

    Thanks for helping.
It's the jargon on xda developers that's got me. My phone is listed there (I think) but many times and I don't know which to download.
Apparently there's 2 general varieties of my phone (HTC x515m), mine which I guess comes under GSM and an American CDMA (sprint or something) which is prob a different model number, but they don't mention x515m specifically.
    After that I'm lost.
I don't have any trouble understanding most technical stuff, but that XDA developer's site is a world of it's own.

I have wondered if items sold in OZ are 'specific' because they may not appear to be listed even in the manufactures catalogs.
I base this one item I have, a Honda brand generator purchased from Marshall's (Woolworth's Hardware) before they went broke.
You see this in cameras and printers that are model XYZ 1234 but they only list it as a XYZ 1XXXX in any publications.
Isnt 'Sprint' an American Carrier like AOL and Verizon I think it was, not an actual operating system?
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

    Yeah Sprint is a carrier.
My phone is optus and is chockers with optus apps I don't want, can't remove and can't stop any that run in the background.

    I downloaded 4EXTRecoveryUpdater.apk , yoda_ICS_v8.5 and yoda_kernels_v11.5 so I guess I'm ready to give it a go.
Isn't the system ICS (ice cream sandwich) the same as kernel ? instructions I've seen say to download all 3 but I can't find a ref with what to do with the kernels. Hmmmm !
Another one is Titanuim backup, I guess I'll install that too.

    Any comments ?

    Yep the model is x515m

These are pages I've looked at :

It seems the more pages you look at the more confusing it is because there are different ways to achieve the same thing. Just gotta pick the right ones and get the method in the right order.

Let's do this in stages, concentrate on rooting your mobile first, once done then you can worry about upgrading the software, follow the guide below or those you have posted

I have a Motorola, easy because Motorola have made it simple to do
HTC, have a Desire in the draw, it was so hard to root that i gave up
    Let's know when rooted

    Thanks for that.
    Do you have revolutionary ?
All the links seem to be broken and I can't find it to download.
So is unlocking your bootloader the same as rooting ?

    Changed my mind about VRoot.
    XDA says it contains malware.
Still looking for the best software to root with and starting to get lost again now.

    This video looks promising :
However, there is a point late in the video where he says all data will be lost.

Naturally enough, I don't want to lose my contacts, settings, radio info, accounts etc. so at some stage in the process I would need to do a backup ? Which program does that and when do I run it ?

This is my downloads so far :

Contacts will be in the cloud (Google), can save to your sd card in the mobile!

Yeah that's true. They are already on the card.
What about any accounts information ? Or radio info ?. I'm not sure what frequencies some of these loaders might put on my phone eg I might end up with American which prob won't work here.

I have done a full backup to my computer which is basically copying everything on the SD card.

ok, take the plunge and hope you can retrieve them later. Root it!!!. or back up when you open the GUI. I think you have to be prepared to lose all even if you lose some?
