Got an email from Telstra this morning.
I no longer have to pay for my silent number.
Good old Telstra lol.We wanted to get in touch to let you know about a few changes coming to your Silent
Line service.
From 18th February 2018, we're removing the $2.93 monthly Silent Line fee from your
fixed home service so you can enjoy it free of charge.
This means it will no longer appear on your bill.
Your name, address and phone number will continue to be private.
These details won’t be published online, printed in the White Pages, or available from Directory Assistance.
We're also giving you more flexibility and control over your privacy settings.
We’ll refer to your Directory Listing setting as ‘Unlisted’ and your Caller ID will be switched to 'Off' so
your number is not visible to other callers.

Spend your $35.16 annual savings wisely
When I read the thread title I thought this post should be in the jokes section
'kin helstra.........I hope you die
When my home phone was with Telstra and I wanted to have my number removed from the phone book, I felt like this was a bit of a scam.
The trick was to ask for an "unlisted" number - the only one available now. You'd phone them and ask for an unlisted number and they'd say "Oh, you want a private number, that'll be $2.93 a month". Then you'd go round and round in circles repeating "No, I do not want a private number, I want an unlisted number". Eventually, they'd realise that you knew what you were talking about and were not going to back down. The consultant would admit that they could give you an unlisted number at no cost. Basically the same thing as a private number, but no $$$ for Telstra and a marked decrease in nuisance phone calls.
I wish I had known about that... I've been paying that fee for decades.
Whats the difference between an 'Unlisted Number' and a 'Private Number' and dont tell me its $2.93 a Month either??
I must ask my daughter about her number and if she's being charged to change it.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!
Now you get your phone unlisted for free, but if you want to know the number, you have to pay them to find out
Yes I am an agent of Satan, but my duties are largely ceremonial.

Good one!
I am sick too of constantly getting unsolicited calls even tho I am on the "do not call register".
The wife got the same email. I think there is another reason why they say you its Free and me thinks it the Roll out of NBN
I agree unless Telstra has some other plans in mind to rip their customers off.
Telstra does nothing for nothing but they seem to be able to profit out of it.
My Daughter moved recently and she cancelled the listing after paying that fee for the best part of
8~10 years.
She wasnt impressed when I told her what was going on.

It doesn't stop them, but it does cut it down to a dull roar a year or two after your number is removed from the directory.
I think you are correct. The feature is free for people on NBN connected phones, as is calling number display. Telstra always did the "unlisted number" service at no charge, but would attempt to hide this from the consumer and substitute a billable product in its place. They've had their arm twisted and are now being more open about the availability of the service that has been free for years.
Do Telstra still try to make customers on NBN fibre to the premises connections use a crusty VoIP telephone solution, or have they started offering a phone service that connects direct to the voice ports on the NTD like other RSPs?
Phone is now basically VOIP under NBN. With FTTN ( and presumably other methods of connection) if your internet drops out so does your phone.
Thats why Telstra offer their new Gateway with 4G fallback, internet goes down, 4G takes over.
