saw it on the news , a wonderful story. Its a shame to see how many would have gone to the scrappers , but thats the way it was . Values of many fast cars plunged into the toilet so it was better to be rid of them.
Wow that's quite a story
Great read...thanks.
The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.

I used to own an XB GT wish I never got rid of it.
My next door neighbour has an XW GT sitting under a tarp in the back yard.
In late 1967 I decided I wanted a better car, possibly NEW after some 3 years of driving Austin A40's I had bought very 2nd hand for under a 100 Pounds.
I was very impressed by the Japanese cars like Toyota and Nissan/Datsun due to their smarter looks and interior features like a HEATER, radio, quad heads lights and bucket seats.
Most were grossly under powered with their 4 cylinder 1000~1600 cc motors but they were economical.
I started off with Toyota Corona at $1998 and looking at a 'standard' GTHO Ford that pushed the cash register buttons to almost $5000 which was way, way WAY beyond my means to eventually buying a Toyota Crown, 4 cylinder for $2242...................
Each of the majors were producing their 'Muscle Cars' like the Holden Monaro, Valiant Charger and of course, Ford with the GT-HO at that time.
I have to say I was never into those muscle cars but the one I really liked was the Ford GTHO.
It was the model before this one in the story, painted an iridescent Green with that Gold pin stripping on the sides.
To me its one of the most stylish cars ever built.
About 10 years later I did own a standard XB Sedan which was a good family car but thats about all.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

I brought this brand new in January 1971 then sold it eleven years later at double the price i paid for it to buy a house, The guy i sold it to done the same thing and sold it to his brother in law who still has it in storage in Perth, its still registered with the plates that came with it new.
And yea i should have kept it.

I bought an almost new XB panel van back in 75. Apart from the 250 6 cylinder, it was the biggest heap of sh1t I've ever owned. It was just a big rust bucket within a few years. A mate bought a sandman van at the same time, that's what I should have bought too.
I had an HJ Sandman Van I reckon it was quicker than the GT.
If you lived in Newcastle in 1977 you would have seen it around.

This story made me thnk of ust how stupid the majority of us are.
My favorite car in the whole world was my first. A 1966 Holden HR Prem.
I owned 2 of these in my youth. I looked the other day on Car Sales and even an average one is fetching low 20K. Top notch ones, 35K.
Lowest I could find was 8K for a POS.
I am kicking myself now!!!

Have to agree with Porkop about how stupid we are sometimes, I'll regret selling my XB V8 Hardtop until the universe ends and the last star burns out...
Bought an XT V8 sedan in the mid 80's, took the engine out to put in an XB 4 door sedan I had at the time, then towed the rest out the dump, no rust or dents, just needed paint...

I had a mate who had an XT GT that was pure Phase III. He even replaced the dash with one from a Phase III. I, too could have had similar for about 3K, but couldn't justify the expense. Isn't hindsight wonderful?
