Default Geez I ask some strange questions.....

Got up the other morning, lying on couch watching news drinking coffee (which wasnt super hot or anything). Sneezed. And it hurt. Tried to swallow....and couldnt.

Excuse the horrible shot of the inside of my mouth, a bit of coffee tongue . Anyway, I had a huge blood blister. The photo doesnt give it justice in size...it was between a 10 and 20 cent piece in size.

It burst within 5-10 minutes spewing a heap of blood down my face as I coughed when it tried to internally drown me.

Has anyone ever seen/heard anything like this ?? Its like the sneeze blew the inside of my throat open.

Its left a very large mark on the back of my throat. I am in 2 minds whether to see my GP earlier than usual, its sore of course but nothing serious.

    Well... that was bad timing.

Just sat down munch on a sandwich and opened this.

I have had a few of these over the years, which seem to appear in similar circumstances, eating/drinking.

I ran it past my doctor and he said it's similar to a blood nose, blood vessels bursting under the skin causing the blister.

There was no serious underlying cause in my case, but if it concerns you mate, best to ask your GP to be on the safe side.

"Angina bullosa hemorrhagica (ABH) is the term used to describe acute, benign, and generally subepithelial oral mucosal blisters filled with blood that are not attributable to a systemic disorder or hemostatic defect. [1, 2, 3, 4]

This condition was first described in 1933 as traumatic oral hemophlyctenosis. Badham first used the currently accepted term angina bullosa hemorrhagica in 1967.
The lesions may be confused with other more serious disorders (eg, mucous membrane pemphigoid, epidermolysis bullosa, linear IgA, dermatitis herpetiformis); however, the isolated nature, rapid healing, and rare recurrence of angina bullosa hemorrhagica blisters generally are sufficient findings to rule out the previously mentioned conditions.
The lesions of angina bullosa hemorrhagica may be indistinguishable from blood blisters related to thrombocytopenia; however, blood tests and the absence of areas of ecchymosis, epistaxis, or gingival bleeding are helpful signs to rule it out.

Some authors suggest mild trauma as the causative agent in angina bullosa hemorrhagica to break the epithelial–connective-tissue junction, causing bleeding of superficial capillaries and resulting in the formation of a subepithelial hemorrhagic bullae."

It is probably this admin. Basically a mild trauma (in this case a sneeze) has caused a break in the tissue that connects the mouth lining to the deeper tissue and this space has filled with blood from the torn capillaries in the region of the break

Unfortunately it could be caused by a bigger problem but I like to think it's this more common possibility. The simplest answer is usually the right answer

Oh well, its good to know someone else has had the same
I will see my GP about it of course, but I dont see him for 10 days. But all seems good now, just a strange thing to happen as I had never heard or seen anything similar and there actually wasnt much on Google..

I am thinking it is related to the sneeze rather than eating or drinking. In the last few years my nose is driving me insane. I am one of those people that breathes purely through their nose and not their mouth.
If my nose blocks at night while sleeping, I instantly wake up as I cant breathe. As to breathing, I am a nose spray addict - they say dont use for more than 3 days , I am up to 12 years. I told my GP and he nearly fainted , he sent me for an immediate facial scan and incredibly came back showing my sinuses are actually pretty good. I now get hay fever constantly, as does everyone else I know where I live from my family to my neighbours.

I reckon this will be it, thanks mate.

For sure, its easy to jump to conclusions too much, but at the same time never ignore anything strange. And always get a second opinion if you think they are wrong.

I am lucky in that I have a great GP who never hesitates to take further action and does what he can to keep costs down.

The older you get, the more conclusions you jump to if you haven't seen it before.....trust me.

Hah! As we age, jumping to conclusions is about the ONLY exercise we get!
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...

maybe the medications you use for your other pain are making you more prone to burst blood vessels?

I have never had anything like that but I am going to see a doctor next month as I have 'problems' swallowing at times. Like you, Nasal congestion tends to interfere with my breathing which if I do use a spray relieves it somewhat.
I am an ex smoker and that along with my age made me wonder if the lining of the Nose/Throat area was now not as 'elastic' as it used to be and mucus forms to coat the surface.
I often have a 'massive' ball of mucus (feels like it) just 'sitting' in the back of the throat that dynamite wont shift but when it does eventually, its rarely bigger than a couple of match heads and clear.
I have never been directly told I have Asthma but then neither have I been told I havent.

I did say to a doctor during a visit that didnt actually pinpoint what was wrong that 'All would be revealed at the Autopsy'..................

I would get it checked out Gordon, it could be something stuck back there that you are only partially clearing each time.

VroomVroom, I am pretty sure its not related, but like Gordon, will make enquiries.

Hey Gordon, at what age did you give up smoking ? Just curious as we all know you are 75, and as a regular poster have only mentioned 1 or 2 ailments that I can remember so you are obviously travelling fairly well.

As many know, its never too late to give up smoking, I have been pretty disappointed to have 2 mates take it back up ( my age ).

This is a well made point. I recently gave up pain killers (mild ones) for my back and decided to just live with the pain. MANY issues cleared up after that.

@admin.... I do not have the pain level that you have talked about. Nothing close.....

I started smoking about 20 (1962?)(found me first packet when cleaning a train) and finally stopped end of January 1982.
Five years before I stopped I was smoking fairly heavily, between 20 & 30 a day and say I was to go to work tonight (11pm) I would start smoking after breakfast (never smoked and ate) say from 9am this morning and get home 9am tomorrow morning, I would go through at least 60 in that time. It was when I opened and started the 4th packet one morning and was flat out walking up 10 steps, I knew I had to cut back so I bought a pipe which over the next 3~4 years learnt how to chain smoke it.............ITS POSSIBLE, believe me.

I am not going to bullshit as I am grossly overweight (150 PLUS Kilos) but that and the smoking is now affecting my breathing quite considerably. My mobility has also spat the dummy this last 18 months and I use 2 walking sticks unless there are rails or furniture to hang onto.
The last time I was in Hospital (November) my Oxygen saturation levels with and without added oxygen was 97 % !!!!
Yet I have a 'GALLON' of flem sitting at the 'back of the throat' and I can cough hard enough to spit me belly button out me arse and wont shift............when it does move, its clear and less than a garden pea in size.............
I am using Ventolin and Symbecort and something else in a capsule given to me by a Heart specialist, who incidentally said my Heart is ok and causing any of respiratory problems I am experiencing now.

In my present condition I dont take any of our animals to the Veterinaries because unlike Medical Doctors, they would take me out the back and quick whack behind the left ear would solve all my medical problems.

As I have said in a previous posting, All will be known after the Autopsy.......

There is a point at which some people who are really long term smokers cannot give up smoking because the very nicotine that is killing them, is actually keeping them alive as it expands the airways.
