Sounds like the laser may be out of alignment.
Given that you gan get a new burner for $25 ~ $30 I wouldn't be loosing any sleep over it.
If you don't want to part with the money, just keep both drives hooked up to your tower.
I have a CD/DvD combo drive went to put a cd into it and would not pick it up. I then connected a normal cd burner to the pc, it picked up the cd and ripped the contents of it no problem.
The brand of the cd/dvd combo is a Sony DRU 800a
The cd burner is a LiteOn 52*32*52 Model SOHR-5238S
Pays to keep old burners.
Why is this so.
One for the pc guru
Thanx.

Hi Fernbay,
Thanx for the quick reply. I 4got 2 mention that the combo drive works normally, ie burns and reads all other CD/DvD's. Go figure.
Thanx again for the quick response.

Yeah I got one here that wont read some burnt DVD Pain in the A$$$
This is a common problem.
It has been known for many years now, that CD and DVD players will not successfully read approximately 10 per-cent of copied CD's and DVD's.
This is no doubt due to manufacturing/production tolerances.
every combo drive i have ever had goes belly up with cd's.
