im pretty sure you can run up to 100ft of vga cable before you start to see distortion, if my memory serves me correctly. I have used 10m cables in installs before with no issues.
I have a 46" LCD TV mounted on a wall. It also has VGA in for running as a PC monitor.
This concept works fine with the 1m VGA lead that came with the TV.
But after installing the TV on the wall i purchased a very expensive 10M VGA D-Sub Monitor lead. The company promised me it would work, but the real world results are some what different.
(Yes i know the cable length is rather long)
It seems i can run the TV as my Monitor from my laptop if i choose "TV only" not "Dual Screens".... and then only sometimes.
So.... That leads me to a WiFi option. Someone just handed me a link to these little units.
Has anyone used them or similar before?

Thanks urban,
Yeah have tried all settings, even allowing extra video ram. Works on a lesser distance cable, just not the 10m one. Perhaps i should try a different laptop and see if there is any change?
mmm r using the nvidia control panel? try another computer, I was using a desktop with a 8500gt
if u still can't get it look into vga over cat5 probbably more reliable than wireless
The Nvidai control panel mentioned before drove me around the bend for such a long time. The 2nd monitor detection on most Nvidia Chipset video cards is very poor. Unless your screen is putting out a strong signal the nvidia dectection won't work.
On my setup if plugged in via a video recorder it wouldn't detect a 2nd screen, but when plugged in to a DVD Recorder it worked and even over 5 meter cable too.
If you are stuck with this problem you will have to have something between the computer and TV that can keep the signals high. Almost anything can help, if you choose those wireless devices or any other method, make sure you explain your needs to the shop you buy it from and get written down on paper they will refund money if it doesn't work for you.
I just spent the past hour trying to get my laptop connected to my TV, no luck on my big system, but if I plug it in to the bedroom dvd player it works, that is using the same lead too.
At work we use magenta cat-5 units. Probably a bit overkill for your situation but there are cheaper options available for VGA over Cat5.
Jalorathis
You can get VGA exstenders which can run too 100m on unshielded cat5e utp, and 200m on shielded cat5e.
Cheap as chips on ebay.
I had a laptop here recently with the same issues( only short cable though).
I could make it work, but not consistently (It is an nvidia).
I tried everything.
In the end I worked out that I had to boot the laptop with the tv on( and vga input selected) TV is a panasonic 50pz800a. Then it would work everytime.
Never had any probs with 5 or so different laptops on this tv.
Just a thought, are you using non supported resolutions of PC or TV?
What happens if I press alt + F4?
