    Default LG GSA-4163B crashing PC

Every time I put a disk in this new drive and try to read something, it crashes my PC, with a loud 'click', and instant power off. It will write anything. It's a dual-layer writer, and has copied a few disks perfectly (in tandem with an old Pioneer), but if I try to read on it POW!

Any suggestions? I've tried to upgrade the firmware, but I can't select the drive from the software dialog. It's not even seeing the drive, but I'm not sure the version is newer than what's already install? Is there a way to check firmware versions??

It wasn't an expensive drive, but I'd rather not chuck it out if there's an easy fix.

    cheers
    ian
