We have satellite broadband a ping takes over a second.
The VOIP quality was terrible.
One thing puzzles they don't have undersea cables any longer so when
one rings Uk/US how does the signal get there?

it's some old technoligy called satlites there are more of them now days for any application emaginable also phone companys use them even for you to make a call from a land line to another land line to oversea's country's

sat broadband is renowned for its latency. You can still transfer a file fast, but as you say the ping times make it unsuitable for voip.
One of the main links for australia though is the southern cross cable. Lots of interesting reading on its site. Its currently runing and 240gbps and they say can be upgraded to 2.4tbps. I think it introduces about 120ms lag from one end too the other. There is no way to send data faster around the world, even a PSTN international phonecall introduces some noticable audio lag.
There wouldn't be much International IP traffic going over satellite links these days. Can't you get ADSL or cable? (you don't have your location filled in) You're always going to get bad latency over a Sat connection.
The only thing faster than light/radio/electricity is by using a sub-space transmitter like the ones in star trek.
Unfortunately with satellite you will always get lag, so voip, games, even surfing will be laggy but lightning fast for large data packets such as big downloads.
It's the nature of the beast. You're worse off on dial-up.
oversea's country's ??
the satellite links take 250 milliseconds up to down link so this is the biggest problem. Even sat phones have a massive lag time when you are talking.
It goes 32,000 klms up gets relayed then 32000 klms down then the answer does the same trip again .
128,000 klms all up around 2 seconds delay I work on.
