ive been with netspace for 6 odd yrs and never had an infringement.

1: never use public trackers thats how they get you

2: always use peer guardian as suggested above

How do you use peer guardian? Just install it, have it running and then use uTorrent as per usual? Does it just do it thing in the background with no detriment to d/l speeds?

Peerguardian works by blocking p2p connections with certain ips that are used by various groups to see if you are sharing copyright material. It blocks all IPs from a list that is maintained by peerguardian, so it is only good as that list.

    see

So just install and update and it shouldn't reduce d/l rates.

After 5 years with them, i to am also waiting for my first infringement - i don't take any precautions. Considering the amount of shit i've downloaded over the years, i guess i've just been lucky.

    Cheers, RHCP.

My bet is that ISP's will eventually be forced take a tougher course of action than some are now doing for p2p activities in the light of this - Film companies sue iiNet 'for allowing piracy'.
The report can be found at and other places.

ISP's can take action with individual customers under the terms and conditions we all agree to when subscribing to their service.

I know of a few instances where a subscriber has been notified by his/her ISP that they have received a complaint that a particular IP address has been d/l copyright material, but no action would be taken if this first (friendly) warning was heeded. Subsequent infringement would lead to curtailment of services and possible legal action.

Tristen that will all come down to one single decision from the courts

THE SAFE HARBOUR RULE from the free trade agreement , now should iinet win on that basis then aria / warner bros and who ever would have to go to a court and get a warrant every time they had belief that some one was downloading copy written material then get the name etc of that person from their ISP provider then hand that to the police.

So you can see that would cost a fortune in time and money so they are trying this action in an attempt to get some changes and as such reducing their work load and expenditure.

There is about 200 pages on it all at whirlpool

the ISPs are legally required to send out the notices if they get contacted. most people just ignore them. the ISPs dont care if you pirate, its in their interests that you use more bandwidth

Better still invest in a News Server subscription and download what you want that way using NZB files. A quick Google will explain what NZB files are. Peer guardian is good but if I where Media Defender (I am not for the record) I would simply use DSL or even dialup ISP accounts to fish for pirates. A while ago, a hacker made a fool of them and released a lot of their corporate emails and other stuff, which gave some indication what IP addresses they were using but unless there stupid or the guys who do the database for peer guardian have really good inside sources I doubt your 100% protected.

+1 to what SystemRat said about not being 100% protected.
imo the safest way to go is a private share community where they either have a private tracker or upload the files to rapidshare encrypted wth odd file names

Media Defender is only one of a number of firms that works to capture your download activity.

    Heres some background

Probably right IINET is being sued by some copyright mob at the moment and if they have their way ISP’s will be forced to block stuff like bit torrent. Not sure what they will do about other file sharing services.

Plus Kevin747 only wants you to be able to view good wholesome material which will be ok if you into religion or the Brady Bunch (which you won’t be able to download)

This will have two effects the sale of pirate warez and porn CD’s and DVD’s will explode and a lot of ISP’s will go bust or be forced to merge with others as most of the traffic on the net is P2P now and if you remove that locally it leaves Spam as the largest amount of traffic to internet fortress Australia.

It will be interesting to see, as it should be possible to setup a VPN say between the land of the free USA and places like Australia, China and North Korea where you could pull whatever you want over the encrypted VPN link with the filtering being unable to see the content. That would not be real good with P2P and the size of your VPN traffic would perhaps set off alarm bells too.

My Computer just died and had to reformat and have lost everything.
Instead of going to bitlord I am going to try to learn how to use nzb's.
SystemRat any good links and any help would be appreacated.

    Ok I use these people

Forget the monthly plans look at the right hand side middle for multiple months.

12 months 10 GB per month US $43.35
12 months 25 GB per month US $79.95

There billing does not recur and you can get a free trial too.

They also give you a free copy of News Rover software. It is tied to only use their service however. News Rover has its own search function which is subscription based. I have a paid copy but now i would not bother as there are very good public search engines per below.

Here is what NZB files are basicly its a file with all the download links required to get your files. If you use News Rover it associates NZB file type with itself so you just need to click on the NZB file and it will ask if you want to download the file.

One good tip is to set your news client to the maximum number of concurrent connections your provider supports I use 15 and on a good connection I get a 400 MB file down in around 5 minutes or less.
