create your own Sleep button by creating a shortcut on your desktop. Here's how:

    1. Right click on the desktop.
    2. Select New | Shortcut.
    3. Type rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState in the text box.
    4. Click Next.
    5. Type Sleep in the text box and click Finish.

    To change the icon

    1. Right click on the shortcut and select Properties.
    2. Browse to the icon, %SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll is a good place.

Don't know how to get the button near the bottom of the Start Menu, but can get it onto it near the top left side. Click on this shortcut and drag over to the start button and wait until the start menu pops up and drag to near the top left just below where normally XP puts the IE and Outlook icons. A dark bar will show, let go there.

he could enable the quick launch toolbar (right click on task bar > toolbars > quick launch) then drag the desktop icon into it and have it always beside the start button.
