you can get a AirNav RadarBox for a heap of $$$$ but i just want to use a scanner on 1090MHZ and a sound card or slicer.

No you don't need a rx.

Pay the very reasonable PlanePlotter fee (EU25) and you can see traffic in most Aus cities and around the world. I do!

A superceded SBS box went cheap on Ebay recently:

1090 MHz signals are quite wide.

    You can expect MHz bandwidth.

The ICAO spec recommends a minimum of 10 MS/s sampling rate.

The sound card is not fast enough.

I have an SBS-1 and use it with LINUX to do all sorts of stuff.

There's always the SDR Dongle route.

A TV USB Dongle can be obtained very cheaply and along with a Linux programe callaed ADS-B Dump1090, which has to be compiled from the source code unfortunately for those not into Linux.

I have one here, built on a RaspberryPi-3 and using the supplied aerial, can recieve & plot quite a few planes on their approach to London Heathrow.

I've found it gives a very acceptable result for a very small cash layout.

    More details here:

Modesdeco2 is a console (command line) Mode S decoder specifically designed for working with RTL2832U chip dongles or AIRSPY SDR devices in Windows and Ubuntu Linux on Intel/ARM platform with sufficient computing power of processor.

Same here - just a casual user, but nice to know there is other decoding software out there.

I have Raspberry Pi setup. There is a good set of instructions here:

The nice thing about sharing data, is they will give you access to their data. (basically a subscription account for free)

i`ve tried virtual radar server in the past, but never got it working fully.
so i reverted back to planeplotter, running alongside RTL1090 + FR24.

i just assign planeplotter to get data from the port i assigned in RTL1090, i did change the last octet from the default up 2,
so if it was 1234, i changed it to 1236 (cant remember the default off the top of my head, just it starts with 3)
If i have helped you in anyway, dont forget to hit the Thanks button

I would not share to FR24! The Block and Hide many Flights. I also run PP just for recording the flight.
