Macca,
Why, it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, install a 320GB HDD and away you go with the best HD PVR?
Regards,
whats the latest verdict on these DM800HD receivers?
Last I read from Z80 is that the Octagon 918 has far clearer picture? And I wouldn't say that because the DM is DVI & the Occy is HDMI.
The Octagon can't serve and only two different recent firmwares where CCcam & Newcs work well. The Occy runs hot in standby and the pvr/event timer remains dicky.
Don't forget he had his finger in the pie. He was importing and selling them. He had a vested intrest.
Note also that the occy has proprietry firmware. In other words you can't modify the software code.
On the other hand, the dreambox is linux based & open source

The Oct 918 does send sound over HDMI with any f/w I try. Though I do use the optical out for better sound. Your version HDMI cable maybe early or where it connects, dated??
So is the pic quality of the DM500HD that poorer than the Oct 918 (though Z80 had a vested interest in the 800)? No doubt DM800HD better than DM500 qual, HD or not?
Hmmm, never got the HDMI audio working on Octagon. The cable works ok with HTPC (via Asus Slim audio card) Both HTPC and previously Occy connected stright to Sony receiver. Maybe you tried newer firmware ?
BTW, do you get DD over HDMI from Occy or analog only?
Can't compare those boxes cause I do/did not own DMHD.
Cheers
HDMI carries audio no problems.
Others have commented that the picture is marginally better on the 918 compared to the DM800.

Dm500, DM5620, DM600 x2, DM7000 x1, DM7020, DM7025, DM800, VU+DUO and a partridge in a pear tree
All it takes for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing
I think the pic quality is much the same.... 1080 mpeg4 is what it is
The big dif is in boot up time. The dm800 is slower. It take about two minutes to boot.

I've read a review which says -
"DVI doesn't normally cater for audio, but with the supplied DVI-HDMI cable our Sony HD-Ready TV yielded sound as well as pictures. "
Correct?
correct on the DM800 and DM8000 works with audio as well - perfectly.

Can't comment on the Dm800 as I haven't got one.
Do have an Octagon 918 HD and have to say that eventhough I'm happy with it, SD channels look much better on My Relook400.
I found they look good on my 918 and marginally better on the Az but just average on the SD dreamboxes.

I was lead to believe that there was no audio via DVI and even through a DVI to HDMI cable! That's good news.

am sure its only the DM800HD has audio out on its DVI. I have a Momitsu DVD/Media player & its DVI out into my hdmi screen - Its video only.
