As the title says what is the correct freq settings for the internal dreambox slot 3.57Mhz or 6 Mhz for an NDS card?
I believe it is 3.57Mhz.
Thanks

What would you do if your server was stolen or failed beyond repair?

So if you place an NDS card into a Phoenix off a serial port should an NDS card run at 3.57 Mhz or 6Mhz?
I suspect the NDS card runs at 3.57Mhz whilst a whitey for example can run at (or up to) 6Mhz ?
NDS blue cards will overclock in the onboard reader to 7.8mhz. You can use an external phoenix reader at 6mhz using newcs but CCcam at 3.57mhz.
DM500s Black with rear on/off switch $99 inc post , DM800 sim 82 $250 inc post, DM800SE $310 inc
That is not the case if you are running CCcam. Try putting anything over 5.5mhz and see what the internal slots say, simply run CCcam -d and see for yourself what the error message says, so it seems it does matter
I am told ..
NDS foxtel on a box 5mhz
NDS Astro on a box 5mhz
NDS SkyNZ on a box 5mhz
NDS Indovision on a box 5mhz
NDS TataSky on a box 5mhz

Ok so it seems the internal slot may be able to get up to 5Mhz.
Now what is the situation with the NDS card. Does it have a frequency limit ?
What is the best frequency setting?
Does overclocking have the potential to kill the card?
If you have the card running in an external phonix running NewcS I assume you can get 6MHz which may be a good thing.
The internal slot has a higher limit than 5mhz.
I've successfully tested an NDS at 8Mhz using NewCS.
A warning appears saying not to overlock the card over 5mhz but it still works.
And no its not just a message becuase at 5Mhz my NDS had .31 sec responses and at 8Mhz I got .22 Sec responses.
Where are you getting this information about the limit on the internal slot? or are you just making it up?
just making it up as normal ..

I am no expert ... just learning from what is posted here and trying things out.
As far as making things up, why I would do that. That is why I posted here in the first place i.e. looking for answers.
Going back to my question... what freq does the internal dreambox slot operate at ??
Is there a way to read what freq the slot and card is operating at?

The slot doesn't operate at a fixed frequency - it uses several frequencies. I can't tell you what frequency is being used with your NDS card (I don't have one at the moment to test with) but from gado's post it sounds like the answer is 7.8MHz. What the internal slot uses depends on the card, and perhaps the image you're using.what freq does the internal dreambox slot operate at ??
If you experiment with different cards and a frequency counter you'll find the receiver switches through several frequencies to try and autodetect the ATR (NewCS tries to do this too). A few years ago I posted a bunch of measurements to the old Austech forum, gone now, and I don't have my old notes handy. From memory one frequency was around 1.5MHz, another was around 3.5Mhz, another was around 7MHz and another was way higher - like 15MHz.
Systems like this that generate fairly high frequency clocks for peripherals can't generate arbitrary frequencies. They typically have only coarse control of frequency (unlike UART baud rate generators that have finer resolution because the divisors are much larger). To illustrate the point, one of my gadgets uses a 72MHz master clock and consequently can't generate exactly 5.0MHz or 8MHz, it can only do 3.27, 3.6, 4, 4.5, 5.14, 6, 7.2, 9, 12.
To know exactly what the Dream is capable of you'd need either the IBM processor datasheet or Dream device driver source code. They weren't readily available last time I looked: the processor is under NDA which AFAIK prevents Dream from open sourcing the device drivers (they're still only binary aren't they?) But maybe they've been leaked or reversed - someone here might be able to fill us in.
It would most likely be possible to write a plugin to give you that information, if the processor datasheet were known. Otherwise you need test equipment such as a frequency counter or oscilloscope. Is there a way to read what freq the slot and card is operating at?
Side note about closed source device drivers:
One problem with closed source is code can be inserted without anybody knowing. We saw that with the Gemini timebomb. Here's another: suppose somebody - let's call him Rupert - pays Dream Multimedia or a rogue image developer to inject a version that "phones home" UDP packets containing smartcard HSNs. People could eventually counter using firewalls but by the time the trojan was noticed they'd have identified thousands of people sharing their cards.
Don't go giving Rupert any nasty ideas gw1
No, didn't have any luck with the orange in CCcam yet.
Waiting for the race:
NewCS team to provide better support for the Smargo to run in smartreader mode where the orange works already.
or
CCcam team to provide better NDS support so that the orange works.
Who will win? not me.
I finally found my old notes for card clock frequencies generated by DM500.
Several years ago I rounded up a bunch of cards, stuck them in DM500 one by one and used a frequency counter to monitor the clock it generated in response to the ATR. Here's what I found.
Dead / upside down card : 3.150MHz / 0MHz (cycling)
ISkyNet Viaccess : 3.500 MHz
InXWorld ACS 4.1 : 5.250 MHz
Funcard Aurora: 3.15MHz / 0MHz (cycling)
Galaxy : 3.150MHz / 5.250MHz (cycling)
Austar Chucky ACS 4.1 : 5.250 MHz
Delta ACS 4.1 : 5.250 MHz
Irdeto Multichoice Africa : 3.150 / 5.250 / 0MHz (cycling)
Selectv ACS 5.0? : 5.250MHz
UBI Gamma : 3.150 / 0 MHz (cycling)
Mediasat : 15.750MHz / 3.150 MHz (cycling)
Optus Aurora : 3.150 / 5.250 / 0 MHz (cycling)
I didn't have an NDS card on hand to try, so I'm not saying the reports of 7.8MHz aren't correct. But frequencies I did observe were 3.150, 3.5, 5.25 and 15.75MHz. The bottom line is that the Dream doesn't generate fixed clock, it tries a range of frequencies depending on the card's ATR.
