I had this a while ago

Ahh in the bios under the settings for your HDD there was something you had to change

That's the best you will get out of me at 3:00 in the morning

Ill have a Google and see if something will jog my memory

    roma
first check that you have the CPU and CPU fan are installed correctly.
if you can get into BIOS, go to the CPU menu, and check the temperature.
see also your power option setting in BIOS.

    From memory,

XP does not have the sata drivers on the install disc,

you need to find the sata drivers , & install them by pressing F6, as XP boots up,

or slipstream them into your XP boot disc,

    just a thought

Edit: it is not finding your hard drive,

Windows Vista should install no problems,

This has worked for me, but may not be your problem

    hi Roma
the error you are getting there is more hardware related.
try to check your bios setting again, can you see your HDD in BIOS, if yes, try to change the setting in bios to Default options( should be when you save and exit from bios).
another thing you could try is another installation media(disk).
    good luck.

Some more information that may or may not help,

    or could be something else,

    Good Luck

Edit: Can you try to install a copy of Windows Vista (after reseting the bios to defaults),

to see if it will install Ok,

if it installs Ok this may rule out other hardware & assembly problems,

what im trying to say is
if it boots to xp cd, see's the 500gb sata drive, starts to install?
well theres no hdd prob, its the 4gb ram or a pci card load problem
    theres nothing else there.
i do heaps of sata drive xp installs and have never had to do the F6 load sata drivers crap.
unless the bios needs to be set ide\mode on some occasions.
my $ still on the 4gb ram.

amazing how we're all trying to fix it but the op doesnt seem to be?
i had a old msi amd xp motherboard once with a xp 2800 cpu
you had to hit F5 during the boot from cd process somewhere and choose
    achi mode? or something?
or it would hang on the install forever.
yes somewhere in the bios maybe sata\ide mode
pick ide even though its sata
i still bet i9ts the 2x2 sticks ram lol.
op doesnt say how far it gets before it crashes? does it see the hdd?
can you partition the 500gb hdd(good idea)
    does it load xp files?
