Do you have a software firewall (zonealarm etc..) running? If so, turn it off and see if iTune will start.
Can you post the complete error message.
Hi
I downloaded the latest version of ITUNES a week or so ago.Every time I went to open it it cam up with an error"ITUNES HAS ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM" etc etc. This does seem like a common problem thats around!!!!
I have tried everything to sort it out but to no avail. I am using Windows XP SP3
Anyway I decided to download WINAMP wich works fine except when I tried to open some of the tracks I purchased on ITUNES I find they wont play due to the protection.
I now have a few hundred $$ worth of songs that I cant use.
Any ideas.
I havn't tried the IPODS on winamp yet in case I lose whats on there.
Not bloody happy at all!!!
Surely if I purchased the songs I should be able to do what I want with them .'
Thanks
Greg

i agree with Gavin that it is probably a firewall issue. many people get this prob with norton. if u cant u can try this but it isnt a permanent fix
Problem:
Installed iTunes and iPod software on my computer (Windows XP operating system). Double-clicked iTunes icon on my desktop, and also through Start menu, and nothing happened. After much angst (two days worth), finally happened on this solution:
Right-click iTunes icon
Select "Run as"
Dialogue box asks: "Which user account do you want to use to run this program?" "Current user..." and "Protect my computer and data from unauthorized user activity" are the default selections. Underneath these selections is the following note:
This option can prevent computer viruses from harming your computer or personal data, but selecting it might cause the program to function improperly.
Bingo. In other words, staying with this default option may cause the program not to function.
Deselect "Current user" option (which lists you as the current user)
Select "The following user"
Enter your exact same user information in "The following user" dialogue box (your Username and Password)
[i] Example: More than one login is set up on my computer. My login to my computer (not using real information here, obviously!, but as an example) is user:
Username: Phuong
Password: *********
I entered this in "The following user" box. Voila! Itunes opened, fully functional.
Now, synching to the iPod was another problem, (no high-speed USB 2 port, apparently, but after about 15 minutes of having my iPod hooked up to my computer, the computer recognized it, and I've just finished synching. Finally!)
Hope this can help someone else out there with a similar problem!
(By the way, every time I open iTunes, I have to "manually log in" like this -- going through the "Run as" menu. But it only takes a few seconds, so, it works for now).
I tried running it without the firewall and anti virus - This still never worked.
The error message is "Itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close, sorry for the inconvenience"
I also tried Right clicking etc,and this never worked (I dont have that menu)

Try re-install Quick Time. .
Hi,
I just tried to re instal Quick Time and the same thing happens.
Just an update,
I got this sorted out thanks to APPLE SUPPORT .I think I had some old files somewhere or something that were messing things up.
I was really happy with the support service that Apple gave me.
Thanks to you guys for your input too.
Regards
Greg
