Well not sure if I have what you want but I went to a site called tucows good site for software.
or try here I use this and it's great for a lot of things all free.
Hopes this helps.

I don't know if such an animal exists but here's what I need.
A Firefox extension that grabs embedded video and converts it to avi (to preset parameters) on the fly (in the bacground preferably).
I've had a bit of a look 'round (of course) and the only one I've found that does this is download helper, (when you register it). So if Austech has any suggestions I would be very grateful.
Thanks.

quakware made a great youtube downloader, its easy and lots of feature's. free aswell. here'e the link or find it on mininova.org
its its own exe that you put the url of vid into then it downloads and converts to a few different formats. small download so check it out.
Thanks Guys.
@ ageno2gen1, I wanted to avoid copy pasta urls, then bulk conversions.
@ Lazer, I've just today downloaded and installed download helper and I like it for it's right click download function but the video conversion part costs $US28 bucks, and I dun wanna pay that much.
The good thing about youtube now is that they are converting all the vids to a few different formats, flv is passe' now and mp4 is one that is generally available, so I don't have to convert videos now. And the best thing is no more copy paste urls. Yaaaaay!!!!
i use this to download youtube
free firefox extension, downloads as FLV, 3GP or MP4, then just use any old converter to convert to your required format.....

Oh so sorry I wanted to let you get what you wanted without 3rd party software didn't know that you wanted to go that way only. You should have told us that you didn’t want stand alone software if you wanted crap software you should told us. IE: Coalminer, hoe, as we wanted you to get you tube quickly but what ever you do don’t say thanks we wouldn’t like that.
Actually Mr Sarcasm., if you had bothered to learn to read properly, you would see that in both of my posts after my original one I say thanks.
Also in the very first sentence of my original post I specify that I want a Firefox extension.
It looks like I have achieved what I set out to do now, so once again, thanks guys.
