Default 3d ready Bluray Players Coming 2010

At a Sony Blu-ray briefing in Sydney this morning, visiting Japanese honcho Yoshinami Takahashi, the deputy senior general manager, Home Entertainment Group, Sony Corporation, confirmed that 3D Blu-ray discs and players would most likely hit the market in October or November of 2010.

Takahashi said that the movie studios were close to reaching agreement on the final format for 3D Blu-ray, a decision he predicted would be finalised by the end of 2009. He then thought it would be another nine months for Sony Blu-ray-capable players to enter the market. A 3D-capable television and the familiar 3D glasses, of course, are still critical elements of the mix.

When asked what he thought studios were planning for 3D Blu-ray content, Takahashi conceded that shorter-length content was more suited to the technology. As many viewers suffer from headaches and nausea watching full length movies in 3D, documentaries and animated shorts would probably be in greater demand.

The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) announced its plans for incorporating 3D into the widely successful Blu-ray Disc format. The rapid and enthusiastic consumer adoption of Blu-ray Disc, coupled with the format's technical capabilities and capacity make it the ideal format for bringing a vibrant 3D experience to consumers.

"The BDA intends to take full advantage of the format's high bandwidth and capacity to achieve the very highest possible quality 3D experience," said Victor Matsuda, Blu-ray Disc Association Global Promotions Committee Chair. "Just as Blu-ray Disc has paved the way for next generation, high definition home entertainment, it will also set the standard for 3D home viewing in the future."

The BDA, comprised of major motion picture studio, IT and consumer electronics companies, is working on a uniform specification to ensure consistent delivery of 3D content across the Blu-ray Disc Platform. The Association is examining a number of criteria and at a minimum, the specification will require delivery of 1080p resolution to each eye and backward compatibility for both discs and players, meaning that 3D discs will also include a 2D version of the film that can be viewed on existing 2D players and 3D players will enable consumers to playback their existing libraries of 2D content.

"Consumer adoption of Blu-ray continues to grow at a very steady pace," said Bob Chapek, President, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment. "The 3D theatrical market has been very successful this year. We are just now seeing all of the true capabilities of 3D and with Blu-ray Disc's superior technical characteristics, as well as the broad industry support of the format, it makes it the ideal packaged media platform for 3D home entertainment."

The current BDA efforts provide individual companies with the technical information and guidelines necessary to develop and announce products pursuant to their own internal planning cycles and timetables.

    Nvidia announces 3D Blu-ray for 2010

    Posted on 9 Dec 2009 at 16:06

Nvidia has announced that 3D Blu-ray movies will begin appearing in the US Summer of 2010.

Ben Berraondo, Nvidia PR manager for the UK and Northern Europe, confirmed that the Blu-ray Association - to which Nvidia is a contributor - had settled on the “proper parameters [for] what constitutes a 3D Blu-ray” and claimed the first 3D Blu-ray films would hit the shelves “towards the end of Summer 2010”.

Nvidia will support the standard through its 3D Vision technology, with Berraondo noting that the new films will use bit rates of around 60Mbits/second – twice that of a standard movie.

Despite this increase in bandwidth, he claimed that HDMI 1.3, which was released in 2006 and last updated in August 2008, “should have sufficient bandwidth” to ensure smooth playback. New files will be encoded using the MVC-AVC format, which is based on the AVC format currently used by Blu-ray movies.

He also said that 3D Blu-ray movies will need screens with refresh rates of 120Hz, double the current standard of 60Hz, and 2x speed Blu-ray drives. As with all of Nvidia's 3D products, shutter glasses will be required to view films.

The new specification raises concerns about the capability of current hardware to play forthcoming 3D releases, with Berraondo confirming that “future Blu-ray equipment will need more powerful chips” to play content smoothly, with “the majority” of major manufacturers set to release “brand new players” next year.

He also hinted that Sony’s PlayStation 3 was the only current player that could “possibly” run 3D Blu-ray content “with a firmware upgrade” thanks to its discrete Nvidia GPU, which is based on the GeForce 7800 architecture.

Despite the new standard demanding that movie aficionados fork out for a new player and 120Hz TV, Berraondo said that sufficiently powerful players will offer “very good value for money” when running on Nvidia’s low-end Fermi GPUs.
