Default Active Desktop Problem - Xp Sp3

Since about monday i have been having problems with my pc, i get the white screen with active desktop error plastered over it and windows explorer keeps shutting down whenever i try to browse any folders. I tried all the suggestions on the error page and tried a system restore to a previous date, i havent changed any hardware or software in the last month. Not sure what else to try ?

    yep ^
actually, F8 on boot, safe mode
    then malw\bytes
    better option
some of these crappy things are still running processes in windows
    another thought
    start\run\ type in "msconfig"
    choose "selective startup"
startup tab, untick all but av.
save, reboot, tap F8 on boot up
    safe mode, then run mal\w\bytes.

Booted into safe mode then did a full scan, rebooted but still have windows explorer crap itself when trying to browse a folder.

hi loanrangiel, you might have a bit moe luck with superantispyware the free version should fix most problems.
It has a repair feature that is very useful for Repair broken Internet Connections, folders, your desktop and stuff! Check it out!

You'll find this repair feature in preferences

Also in scanning control you might want to tick
    close browser... And
terminate memory threats... options just to be thorough!
    cheers

    try
    Active Desktop Recovery

    Same thing happened to me.
Solution: Put your cursor on a blank spot on the Active Desktop Recovery Error page, do a right click, and select Properties. Select the Desktop tab, then select whatever image you want as your desktop image. It should restore your Desktop just fine.

might not be your problem but worth a try.
uninstall it then do a chckdsk on your hdd.
see if it picks anything up.

As I meantioned above Try superantispyware, It has a lot of features. 1 being desktop policy reset.
Have you tried these features yet?
Its easy to use and free!
And if this doesn't help with the explorer crashing try sfc /scannow

could be a ie problem, running ie 7 or 8 ? if you are, try uninstalling it from add\remove programs.
you may want to run highjack this

and post up the log file. just in case its a malware thingy.
i did clean a pc with this problem not long ago, cant remember wat fixed it but lol.

Using Firefox and have narrowed it down to just 1 problem. I have a folder named movies in my documents folder, i just ripped The Matrix from dvd to avi file and added it to a folder named The Matrix Trilogy, whenever i try to open this folder (The Matrix) i get the MS have to shutdown message and it closes. I did have an active desktop error but that seems to be fixed now.

I have had this same issue before and found it to be a media codec was causing problems when windows explorer was trying to load thumbnail images of my ripped movies. May need to do a codec re-install of the offending codec.

That makes sense as it is only happening in the folder i have movies stored in, will give it a go and see what happens.
