Default cannot delete vlc media files

When I delete vlc media files they go to the recycle bin. I then empty the recycle bin and the files go but the recycle bin icon still shows as full.
When I try to empty the bin again it asks me if I want to delete windows.
When I reopen the folder that the files were in they are still there but cannot be played.
When I reboot the computer the files that I deleted are gone. Any ideas what is going on.
    Thanks
I am using vlc 8.06i and windows XP.

At a guess, something is holding the files in a locked state. Windows has tagged them for delete but cant complete the task until the files are released. Kinda like when you update some windows files/dlls, the new ones cant take effect until you reboot.

As to what is holding the locked, it could be your AV software or windows indexing service.

On 2003 Server, we had a file share for people to update the web pages. When the delete a file it was still there, then the next day they where gone. It was the IIS Indexing service.

thanks crypto7 for explaining what was going on as i had no idea what was happening. It only happens with my vlc files everything else deletes as it should. yes it looks like something is hanging onto them as you say. i'll check out windows indexing and see what i can find out. thanks for your help.
