I know ,you've heard it in all the great forums :
It is not possible to use a custom warning sound for the original Tomtom safety cams!
Right ?
Wrong!!
And it is simple :
Either way create it on your computer (instructions at the end) or you can record a warning sound directly on your device using the following steps:
1. Tap Change preferences in the Main Menu of your device.
2. Tap Manage POIs.
3. Tap Warn when near POI and select a POI category.
4. Tap OK and then select Record warning.
5. Your new warning sound file will appear in the sounds folder on your device.
You can select it as a warning sound for a POI, or when you enable the warnings in the Safety preferences menu.
You can choose a different sound for each Tomtom cam on your system , so you'll finally know if it is a red-light-cam or a speed cam
I've uploaded the 3 most common sounds PW: downunder
Red light camera , Speed-safety camera and Shool Zone - copy the files into the folder "sounds" and you can choose them in the preferences for the Tomtom cam warning sound as stated above.
(Idon't know where they are from ,I had them on my system for ages...)
How to create a custom sound :
You can create a custom warning sound on your computer.
1. Record your sound in 22050 Hz Mono, with a sample size of 16-bit, using your preferred sound recording or editing software.
2. Save your sound as a .WAV or an OGG Vorbis file.
3. Copy the file to the "sounds" folder on your TomTom navigation device.

Look Here -> |
Some more warning sounds :
Beer store ahead
Rest Area ahead-don't pee in the car
And some camera warnings as well as warnings like "over the speed limit"...
You still have to match the file name for your POI category or place the sounds into the "sounds" folder to use them with the Tomtom cams.
no password this time

ohhhh I have that but I dont get sound with it, just a flashing red background on the screen. When I checked in prefs, I realised I *had* selected a sound... but I never hear it. I've just chosen the klaxon-like sound to see if it makes a difference. The other may have just been too unobtrusive.

Ahh, that's fine !
On some Navcores you get a flashing display of the speed on others a the the speed just flashes.
If you want a warning sound ,just activate the warning in the safety preferences and choose the sound you like best.

Is the sound of your licence and Hundred Dollar bills being torn up available ???
Of course the worst most penetrating noise would be the Missus' maniacal laughter in the background as your being led away.
I did, that was the point of my earlier remark... I chose a sound and then couldnt hear it, and thought it wasnt working. I have now chosen something resembling a klaxon and if I don't hear that.. then its def not working. I won't get to test it til Sunday though.
I guess this is a not too heavily veiled reference to the Vicroads laws about using a GPS?

What laws?
I don't have a copy of these laws -so I think they can be applied on me ??

those with older tomtoms that have 32mb ram and are like me running one of the newer uofficial tomtom navcores.
You have to make sure that you have a low bitrate mono sound otherwise you wil loose sound whenever a custom sound is played. EG 56kbps mono ogg file.
Also remember you to untick the "only warn when on route" otion for pois, if you want to hear all the poi waring sound when driving around with no route planned.
