Default PC to PC to move data.

what is the easiest way to extract data from a HDD onto another. The HDD is still in a PC that apparently works (but is old in the tooth). Is there a cable way to link the 2 units together and search the HDD from another computer?
Or do i have to put them on the same network and go through some kind of file sharing?
Is an external HDD case an easy option?

why not just install the second hard drive as a slave then use Ghost to transfer the entire contents of the first drive to the second one a very good way of doing it

use a crossover ethernet between the 2 then use your share folder, should get 1gbps.

selectively transfering data is the objective. Unfortunately one computer ( the target) IS A laptop so i doubt the HDD will fit
I may as well go the external HDD case. Get the data, wipe the drive and then have some spare storage space.
