Default end cover missing from LNB

On Sunday I got my S-I-law to replace the old 11300 lnb with a newer 10700 dual and he mentioned something about 'removing the plastic cap'. I was on the ground trying to direct him on the roof as I cant climb now and he knows nothing about LNB's, dish's etc and I said not to do so and he replied that there was no cover there at all.
Sometime in the last couple of years, the radome has disapeared.
Not on the roof, not in the gutter or the yard.
I have no idea of the LNB's age and the label is almost illedgeble but it looks like 'Accer' or 'Accent' so at a guess its between 5 and 10 years, more the latter I would think.
With the cover gone, you can clearly see the 'Antenna' wires and there was a bit of a cobweb inside so it had been occupied by one of the 'Locals' but not to cause any problems luckily.
While the dish is reasonably visible, the LNB, particulary the radome end isnt which is why we never saw that it was missing.
A friend upgraded his daughters LNB recently partly to upgrade it and because the radome had a piece missing out of it and they had a Fairly Hairy Black thing happily keeping house inside it but it was interferring with the reception so it was deemed time to upgrade and evict the Fairly Hairy occupant at the same time.
It was only after his daughter told him she was having signal problems that he checked the LNB and found the hole in the cover. It wasnt visible from the ground.

So as a suggestion to all is to check your LNB if its not clearly visible, it has been in place for some years and even more so after those recent Gale force winds we have all experienced in recent months.
Even if its Fox or Austar installed, its better to check it out so if there is any problems, you can arrange for a call before it ceases to work when you least want it to.

    Good idea.

With large c band dish installs a little extra signal can be picked up by removing the cover.

Dont try it without some spider surface spray otherwise you know who is going to move in.

Most of my ku LNB's are cracked but still on.

I'm about to setup a 1.8m C-Band dish with a Zinwell LNB, and it doesn't have a cover like I see on a lot of 2.3m mesh dish installs.
    Will this be a problem?

No, i use to throw them out when chasing extra signal but be warned, if your signal level drops suddenly, a spider has moved into it.

are you talking about the big black cover or the little flush cap on the lnb itself.
If you mean the big black one that covers the whole lnb section don't worry about it.
