Why can't you connect the xbox directly to your router?
I am currently connected to xbox live though my computer (shared connection) which is then connected to our router.
I was recently informed that this slows the connection considerably and that a 4port switch or dumb router is the way to go. Whilst i have an OK connection speed wise (although i am looking to get faster), it is constantly dropping out.. (discussed in another thread )
Is this true and if so is anyone selling them or know of good models to buy?
Cheers

Why can't you connect the xbox directly to your router?
I am upstairs.... i only put one port in my wall to go down to the computer room where the router is. dangit.
you could as you said buy a 4 port switch from any computer shop they are not exspensive & connect the uplink port on the switch to the port on the wall & hook up both computer & Xbox to say ports 1 & 2 on the new switch.
I am confused as to how the current set-up works, as gather you have one cat cable running from your router upstairs to the computer/Xbox.
As do you swap out the cable for the device you are currently using, or is one of the devices wi-fi?
Edit: other option just hought of, do you have 2 NIC in your PC, one to router, other to XBox?

We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them - Albert Einstein
Your CAT 5 cable that runs from upstairs to downstairs actually has 2 groups of pairs (in the one cable)....so you can use the second pair to connect directly to the router if like....You must be handy and make adapter leads for each end though..!.... I had the same prob and did this, works a treat...(Thanks to Moof for this idea)...
or like Neutral said, just buy a switch for upstairs...

okay
get a cheap switch.
Ive got a couple in stock if you cant pick one up locally.
Connect the cable coming out of your wall to port1 on the switch.
Connect your computer to port 2
Connect your xbox to port3
connect your dreambox to port4
connect your PS3 to port5
you get the drift,
Just make sure DHCP is turned on at your router, and all devices are set to "automatically obtain IP"
