Just use the null modem cable without the network connection and see how you go. Are you sure you have a null modem cable?
Leroy
Sorry I know there have been a thousand threads on this but I am having difficulty flashing my old DM500-s using a null modem cable.
I am attempting to use dream up to flash the box with cccam and other images but it seems to fail every time.
I have even tried to restore the backup I made.
The good news is the box still appears to be connecting to dreamup ok and I can still ping it using dreamup.
Whenever I try to flash a new image it asks if I would like to perform a flash erase which I say yes to.
It then starts to do its thing but only runs for a few seconds before stopping completely.
Any ideas on the problem would be appreciated, I won't be able to give them a go until tomorrow but would like to start the day armed with some fresh ideas.
Thanks

Thanks for your quick response LeroyPatrol.
I don't have a network connected, the box is only connected to a monitor and the laptop via null modem cable, No LMB.
The cable is definitely a null modem cable. I am having to use a USB- Serial adapter, I don't know if this would affect anything. I am wondering if the baud rate may have something to do with it.
what image are you putting on it. what image was on it. I thought I read that from gemini to pli there was some problems with the way it partitions it or something (years ago now)
So the laptop does not have a serial port so your using an adapter.
can you use another computer with a serial to test if its the adapter (I guess you cant as you probably would have tried this) edit: I guess its working as you created a backup image!
Can you connect it to a network and use flashwizard (AT OWN RISK!)
Can you ftp into the DM, and transfer the image into /tmp and install from there (AT OWN RISK) ( i though I read somewhere that some ppl were doing it this way - could have it ass backwards)

The box had an old gemini project image on it. Don't recall what image it was but it had a big picture of the earth from space when it booted up. It also had cccam 1.2.1 and a bunch of other cams. I'm reasonably confident the adapter is working ok as dreamup communicates fine with the dm500. I also use this adaptor for other applications.
As a last resort I will try Flashwizard but my friend bricked his box using it so I might try to ftp into the box if I can't find another solution.
I suspect the network option is out now however as the box doesn't boot. The only method of communicating is via dreamup. Out of curiosity can you simply do a flash erase without loading a new image or will this also brick the box.
Thanks
What USB to serial adapter is it?
If its a yumcha i don't like your chances...

perhaps as a first attempt, try and find someone with a serial port, and put all things you need on flash drive, image, dreamup and try it serial to serial.

Thanks.......I'll find a PC with a serial port tomorrow and try flashing it without the adapter. I'll let you know the outcome.

As others have said above, get a pc with an onboard serial port. I have found that you can have varying degrees of sucess with USB to serial converts as not all are built equal. I personally use an IBM one and we have Aten branded ones at work that work fine also.

Thanks for all your help so far. Not sure what brand usb-RS232 it is but it's almost certainly it is yumcha variety.
Im stocking Aten units at the moment, paticularly for austech members

"Out of curiosity can you simply do a flash erase without loading a new image or will this also brick the box."
Yes, you can just do a flash erase and the box will not be bricked. I do this all the time when I re-image my DM500 boxes.
As stated above, you really need to ensure you are using a PC with a serial port. I never trust the usb converters
Enjoy

maybe try an earlier version of dreamup .. that has reportedly given success in the past
note : the world from space pic was on pli iolite - so not too old an image but worth going to pli Jade
note : the gemini to pli problems were actually maxvar to normal image problems - but serial dreamup should get round all those
Dm500, DM5620, DM600 x2, DM7000 x1, DM7020, DM7025, DM800, VU+DUO and a partridge in a pear tree

I have found a computer with a serial port this morning and the new image has flashed no problem.
I should have recognised such a simple problem but have had no problems with the adapter in the past which threw me.
Thanks again

Your problem is EXACTLY a problem I have here at home.
When I first got my DM500s and tried to flash a new image, I spent 3 days trying to connect.
EXACTLY the same problems you had. Used dreamup, erased, started to load then crash after I think 14 seconds.
I'm a sparky by trade and have cables coming out of every hole you could imagine, so having the right cable was not a problem. I threw on Network 2, network 3 and invented network 4 to be sure. NOTHING.
Was using XP. Reloaded Win ME, then Win98, then bloody Win 3.11. NOTHING.
Tried my little bacup PC. NOTHING.
Then I tried my Son's crappy PC that has so much porn on it, you must wear latex gloves when touching the keyboard.
Dreamup worked FIRST time and has always since.
So, the motherboard is the issue. No matter what you were going to attempt on your PC, you were never gonna succeed. I have since built 3 new Asus dual core 3gig Hz PC's and none of them still connect correctly with Dreamup. My Sons Latexed protected PC is my only solution when I need Dreamup. So i dont put Net Nanny on his PC for these reasons.
I use Flash Wizard 6.3 when I choose to change an image and have had no problems using that. It's quick and has always done the job. And I can use Flash Wizard from any PC in the house..
Flash Wizard is used via your network.

Cheers, Saintaholic
yeah, I use the only PC i still have with XP on it to do Dreambox stuff (Jaycar and flashing of Dreambox). The motherboard isn't that old though, it's just a cheapy that I can put my Socket 775 CPU into.
