    Default TomTom XL FOrmat Problem

ok i was going to update my friends TOmtom XL.

Anyway in the past when i have updated the TOmtom's i have formatted them before i installed a new navcore on them.

Anyway this particular XL has 1GB but no Card slot,
So i Tried formatting it with windows,,,,, BIG mistake as it gave me an error and said it could not complete it.. ANyway now it is screwed, and i cant get into it without formatting it, but windows now wont.
I am running win7 so i am now trying to format it with command prompt... with admin rites. BUt i got the following error....

    .

    C:\Windows\system32>format
    Required parameter missing -

    C:\Windows\system32>format j:
Insert new disk for drive J:
    and press ENTER when ready...
The type of the file system is RAW.
The new file system is FAT.
    Verifying 980M
1926169 bad sectors were encountered during the format. These sectors
cannot be guaranteed to have been cleaned.
Invalid media or Track 0 bad - disk unusable.

No i dont know what to do... if i restart the tomtom i might not get it back right? Is there other software to format things? should i turn the gps off then back on.. DId i just brick my mates GPS? cheers.

Just in case for next time : only the 910 (and some 710) has a HDD built in.
If Windows can't format the Tomtom then you should use a SD formatting tool.
In most cases a simple checkdisk will show defective sectors and if you are lucky they can be repaired - after that Windows should be able to access the drive.
If after a checkdisk some sectors can't be repaired and a good formatting tool can't help either you are better off buying a new device as the damaged flash memory can't be replaced.
If you have a SD card slot on your device use it instead of the internal memory.
