Default TomTom XL IQ Application won't update?

Ok got the daughter a new Tom Tom XL IQ Routes for Xmas - all worked very well out of the box. Decided to use latest map gaurantee and downloaded new Aust map. After that the screen locked up at starting every time. Followed instructions which included removing application from device and computer (Tom Tom Home installed) and now everytime it connects it says it needs to update device but after 15 secs says device is up to date and no files needed. Basically the device does not work now( no application) and not sure what to do? Can i simply install the application another way?

    Thx

Well I think I know enough about them - have used the application on my PDA for many years. My simple question relates to Tom Tom Home (which I have not used before) - it knows it wants to update (ie reinstall application I assume) but never installs any files? Can I simply download the application/programme from somewhere else?

In general the TomTom are pretty hardy, I doubt you have done any permanent damage.

You should be able to safely format your TomTom and start fresh using backup files people have so kindly provided on these forums.

If you have a separate memory card your best bet is to use that just to be doubly sure.

It may be a bit of trial and error as to which software work best for your daughters tomtom (I think the TomTom XL's have 32 mb of RAM whereas some of the more expensive models have 64 mb, this I believe can cause issues for some users).

    Basically what you need is:

A copy of the TomTom software Note: I don't mean TomTom home (You can quite often use later than what originally came with your TomTom and get extra features not intended for your model)

A copy of the latest maps (I think certain maps will only work with later versions of the Firmware but you'll figure it out )

The latest Keygen (Needed as the maps need to be activated for your specific TomTom)

There should be enough info in the FAQ's to get the TomTOm going again !!

@ Hubrid : I think you are wrong this time

All he needs is to connect the device to the PC without TT Home !
After that delete all files in the route of the device except the ttgo.bif.
Start TT Home and click on "update my..." after that Home should offer the latest update for the device.
If so : follow the instructions and try again.
When finnished get into the menu of Home and click on the "latest map guarantee..."
After that the device should be up to date and all is legal.

Thanks Downunder. Actually did get the app reinstalled etc but now back to original problem of freezing on startup on Tom Tom logo. Have not formatted the device yet because everytime I TRY TO BACKUP THE FILES IN WINDOWS xp it doesn't seem to copy all folders even though i have them all as "show hidden files" Guess that is the last resort but pretty ticked off that a new device does this only 1 day old. The fact that they have advice on how to fix it would indicate it is a common occurrence Really wanted to stay "legal" so do you have any other advice - it is a Tom Tom XL IQ

I went through a similar issue with my TomTom XL as well, bought it, read the exciting instructions about how to update it.

Saw something about doing a full backup, didn't do it and reboot issue after first upgrade.

In my case the filesystem itself had a little bit of corruption, I did a chkdsk on the device and it found and fixed the errors.
Try a chkdsk and see if you have issues.

Alternatively you *could* reformat but I'd personally do chkdsk first.
If windows explorer won't backup try "xcopy", you'll need the /E and /H switch to grab directories and subdirectories.
FYI, I use robocopy normally but you probably don't have that installed

Even if you do wipe the device clean, the TomTom home will re-install the application, the map guarantee will get you a legitimate map back

Thanks Anon. Interesting you mention that as when I hooked it up to a vista computer it did mention "scanning and fixing". Mind you it does that sometimes with other memory sticks to. Anyway will try it first. If that fails do you just format it with the windows format?

For all SD cards and similar storage devices read this please :
If you really have to do a full format of your SD card you should do that with a proper and not with the Windows Explorer.

In most cases it is more than enough to do a quick format with the Windows Explorer or simply delete the files and folders.
You ma ask: Why is that?

Well , your SD card is a flash memory with limited read/write cycles and a full format puts a lot of stress on it ,and reduces the lifespan of your card.

See downunder's post on that, I agree, flash is designed for many reads / little writes

Anyway, I don't use Vista but it may be doing something to check the integrity, but I'm not sure if I would trust Vista, I'd probably use the command line...
