Default What crime is prevalent in your area ?

I thought this might be an interesting topic. Obviously different areas of Australia have different rates of crime. Without using statistics , what crime do you think is an issue in your area ?

I live in a pretty quiet area ( Southern Mornington Peninsula , Victoria ) but it is also a tourism area. For the period December through to February/March the population expands times 10 which makes thing pretty chaotic.

In the off season , it is very quiet and I would say most crime would be driving offences , ie speeding and some drink driving even though the area is heavily targeted by police for those offences. The area has almost zero migrants apart from some elderly greeks and italians.

Over the tourist season , assaults are very high as are road rage related incidents and alcohol related incidents. Shop lifting is prevalent and pick pockets are becoming common as well.

So in a nutshell , I live in a low crime area that turns in to a crime hell hole for a few months a year. What crime do you see ( or hear about ) in your area ?

Swap sides of the Bay and my area is pretty much identical. Riding unregistered dirt bikes on the roads is probably the biggest non-summer crime around here.

Edit/ Can't believe I almost forgot this one. The bloody spandex patrols #@$@#@#'s riding 3 wide, middle of the road, zigg-zagging in front of traffic, etc.

SA Gawler, weekend drunk related offences like vandalism, the odd car stolen. Gawler main street on weekends is apparently (according to the media) one big punch up. Can't say I ever have experienced this myself when I have been there.

Does there need to be arrests to make it a prevalent crime?

Just like all these seasonal crimes people speak of, they go one all year round.
It's just during the summer season, there are summer cops, bored out of there brain so they go looking for the smallest thing to go and write up.

I can park in a loading zone all year, except for summer
I can drink in a public place all year, except for summer
I can sleep in my car all year here, except for summer
I can go watch a fight at the pub all year, nothing every happens, except for summer
Same with Fake ID's, under age drinking etc etc.... never a issue, until the summer cops come to down.

So whether you get caught for it or not.... it's still there. Thus E-crime is the biggest in my area.

Penriff NSW - car theft, malicious damage, plastic bin fires around units, occasional car fires in underground car parks. There's always a copper chopper floating around late at night - usually Thursdays, Fridays.

Ah you know, the usual stuff - murders, fights, drunken brawls, knife attacks, hostage situations, speed chases, car crashes with engines on fire, break and enters, suicides, gangs, bomb threats etc. Weekends and holidays are the worst.

95% caused by alcohol. I know this because...

The police radio are still analogue here. Just about to go digital though.

Funny, I hear callers to the radio from the Peninsula saying police numbers are too low & crime is on the rise in that area. Probably has more to do with all the oldies in the area with nothing better to do than complain.
Also are you saying that all the criminals in your area head out of town to do their 'work'?

My neighborhood : Thieves broke in to 1064 homes from April 2008 to March 2009, a 2.5 per cent rise on the year before.

Actually the fashion police are making sure people around here never commit the ultimate crime... wearing tracky pants in public.

(12.01.10) A Motorcyclist's arrest leads police to clandestine drug lab in Frankston
Frankston police this morning also located what they believe to be a clandestine laboratory after the man's arrest.

The motorcyclist, a 23-year-old Frankston man, was spotted by police on Stanley St last night, where he was riding without a helmet.

He was stopped and searched, and police said he was found to be carrying a quantity of drugs and cash.

i live in a coastal village population 1200.

a local youth stole a car and when caught he was dragged behind a trawler in the nets and flogged out of town and has never been back, he was told if he came back they wouldnt pull the nets up next time.

then there was a spate of b/e, they were caught and spent a week in hospital
vigilante justice was swift and brutal.

there are no fights at the pub, the only problem we have is during the school
holidays with the young ones throwing stones on the roofs and some vandalism, the most exciting thing that happens here is reading the newspaper and not seeing your name in the obituary column.

I live just north of Broadmeadows (Melbournes ghetto) in Roxburgh Park and we get regular rapes, group/gang rapes, and stabbings and brawls at the local Maccas quite regularly.

    Hells angles chapter nearby.

Street burnouts in the local factory estate.

    Drive by shootings occasionally.

Meth labs where you least expect them.

The local paper is a never ending source of entertainment.

Real classy area. (Which just reminded me to check my security cameras).

11,000 police and 5.4 million citizens in Victoria. Is there any area that has enough police ?
