use flash wizard pro.....flashing without a serial cable
i have purchased a dreambox dm500 off fernbay on these forums and am currently waiting for it to arrive.
I would like to flash this to an aftermarket image, such as PLi, but do not have a null modem cable. I was hoping to be able to do this with with a cat5 cable? Is this possible?
If not, where could I buy a null modem cable in Perth for cheap? Do Dick smith etc. sell them?

null modem cables from Austin Computers for $7.00
You do know if you asked the question , he would have been more than happy to flash it before it was sent?

Probably - I am just learning my way around dreamboxes, so wasn't sure as to what I wanted him to flash for me, or really anything. Still abit unsure, but think I have a much better idea now.
Austin isn't too far, and $7.00 is fine
But i'll probably try flash wizard pro first. Will there be anything else I'll need a null modem cable for?
Thanks again
you can also ftp the image over and flash via the pli interface. Its all documented on the pli wiki m8. Worst comes to worst, you'll need to buy a null cable.
G'Day Cobber,
It's one of those indispensable tools of any Satellite hobbyist.
Essential that you make sure that it is a full RS232 Null Modem Cable.
There is often the need for a straight through cable as well.
You usually find they are thicker than the partial ones.
Be sure to mark which is which, saves angst later.
Kindest Regards, " The Druid ".All pins are connected. Not shown 1 - 1 and 9 - 9.

1:safest way is with a null modem cable especially for a newbi to the dreams
2: to flash a unit with flash wizard you also need the image file to be fw2 ( flashwizard format)
3: depending on what image is actually installed may mean you can not do a flashwizard flash
if it is not a matching image base EG: standard or max var. They both must be of the same type
or you will get a hang during the flash and then be stuck in yes needing a null modem cable
4: $7 for a null modem cable will be the best money you have spent

dont say linux if i wanted it id install it
It was already pre-flashed with Pli & tested before being sent on the 20Jan10 by express post, SN0559607
The box is a re-furbished box, discounted for you, with a new PSU & remote, and boy oh boy, I've never had so many PM's in my life from somebody offered a discount! I wouldn't have offered the discount if I had of known it was going to cost me so much time answering questions & PM's , scanning images of bag numbers......
Next thing your going to be wanting me to watch it for you too!

The box was pre-flashed with Pli Ionite.
You would be best to upgrade it to the lastest Pli Jade 3 image.
However you can do this without a null modem cable
Download the image I have attached with megaupload >>> <<<
FTP to the IP address of the box
save the image file to the TMP directory
Rename it to root.cramfs
With the remote, go to menu, setup, expert setup, software upgrade, manual update, OK
Give it a minute or two to flash & auto reboot, & off you go

flashwizard is great for mutiboot, not so great for flash though, I'd be going with the root.cramfs method or dreamup and null modem

Terribly sorry for the PM's. Australia post kept insisting that SN0559607 was sent on the 5th of August, and were adamant that the number was wrong. It showed up first thing this morning though, and guess what? SN0559607, just like you said. Don't know what Australia post are doing, but yeh, again, sorry for the PM's :P You didn't need to go to the trouble of scanning the image btw, just wanted you to double check the number!
That's why I didn't bother you again with PMing asking what image was on it to begin with, and just figured i'd work out how to flash it myself.
Thanks again, and apologies! About to power it up now

so you’re going to flash it over a network connection - make sure you don’t use DHCP but set a ip address manually when you do. The reason is that not all DMs' have a mac address setup via hardware but via software configs. When you flash it your DHCP server we see a different mac address on the network and assign a different ip address its then you will lose your communication with the box using flash wizard and have booting issues. This has been discussed in another thread. If your new to DM's use a null modem cable, there are defiantly worth it if and when you do get stuck
I use fernbays method is in post #11
Flashed and wroking perfectly now
Got a few queries but I think i'll start another thread for that
thanks everyone for your help
if you have a few quires and are now running pli i suggest going to their wiki site and have a really good long read as they have the answers to any question you have
dont say linux if i wanted it id install it

The way I use is ftp image to tmp directory rename it to root.cramfs go to settings software update select manual let it do its stuff and reboot then go to menu do a factory reset and you have a fresh image when it next boots.Works for me.
"Download the image I have attached with megaupload >>> MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service <<<
FTP to the IP address of the box
save the image file to the TMP directory
Rename it to root.cramfs
With the remote, go to menu, setup, expert setup, software upgrade, manual update, OK
Give it a minute or two to flash & auto reboot, & off you go"
In regards to this method i can only ever transfer approx 700416 bytes to the
DM. How can this work on a DM500?????
Cheers

you should not have any problem flashing it with network cable which is also faster providing that you have the appropriate program to do so.
