There are a tonne of compatible devices and adaptors as everyone jumps on the bandwagon. A few general observations.
1) The iPhone will eventually be replaced by the Next Big Thing. What's the anticipated lifespan of the installation?
I suggest you steer clear of any system which requires a custom app for the viewing platform. That would include an iPhone app as well as ActiveX, as these will inevitably become obsolete (and the sooner ActiveX dies the better). Stick to open standards. Then you simply use the web browser.
2) The screen size of any PDA/phone is such that you will seldom see much detail other than "there is a person there". If that's okay, go for it, but don't expect to be able to glean a lot of information from the imagery. That's even before you add network transmission issues over cruddy Australian data services.
