    Default Austar Titan Dying.

Last night channel 610 (NatGeo) decided to display the 'Parental Lock' message.
As we have never used the 'Lock' it took me awhile to potluck the code, 1234 to 'open' it. It aint 0000 as I found out !!!
I followed the instructions religiously to permanatly remove the 'Lock' effect but as soon as the channel was changed, it activated.
So after stuffing about for near an hour, I rang Austar, explained it in words of ONE sylable, went thru the crap, they did a reset, still doing it so we went to the SECOND level of support, explained it all AGAIN untill it was decided the 'Titan' is to be 'retired' and a replacement sent out.
I was quite amused to be asked about doing a 'Self Install' and told him when Austar replaced the Paces with the Titan's etc, the customer was expected to do the Install.
The new box will come with its own card preinstalled which confirms to me the card and STB are 'Mated'.
Also on receipt I ring Austar to activate the new box/card, a letter will then be 'generated' for me to return the old Titan to a suitable Post Office for them to box, note THEM, APO to box, and return to Austar.
Untill this happened last night the Titan has been working normally and why it choose 610 to 'Lock up', I have no idea.
I was offered a MyStar and I hope I wasnt too rude when I said I wasnt interested.
This 'lockup' had no effect on the other 2 Titans in use.

New STB arrived by the Mail Courier this morning from Sydney, 10 minutes to instal, an hour to get activated.

This STB is identical in appearance to the Titan but is called a 'Flinders' now. the same number of rear AV's are mounted horizontily instead of verticaly and the word 'Macrovision' is decaled on the rear panel.
The card is now a bright red with 'My Austar' in white blazed across it.

My wife said the audio now seems 'louder' on the same volume settings, or maybe 'clearer' would be more accurate.
So maybe time was catching up with that STB and its passing its use by date.

I had to go thru the 'Second Level of Technical Support' as it just did not want to activate.
It seems whatever you tell one level isnt all passed on to the 'second level' so you go thru the whole damn rigmarole twice.
Now we wait for the other STB's to die so I can have all that fun over again.

The amount of heat that my titan is putting out, it is a wonder the thing lasts any time at all....I can only just stand to have my hand on the top of it. I wonder how much power that thing consumes.

    I've had my Austar ABS-8776 since 1999,

quite a few of the capacitors are leaning over & stuck to the mainboard,

but the thing just keeps on going,

    (never turned off 24/7)

must be nearly due for a new one ?
