Default map programs and maps of australia

    gday all
thought this may be the section to ask about this
when i go camping in various areas of Tassie, i usually take my big map, its not very detailed being of the whole state so ive been considering buying a few more detailed maps of various areas.
what i was wondering was is there a website with really detailed maps of the whole of australia or even better, a program with really detailed maps (preferably available via trade on here)

Try the Hema maps or buy localized maps at the news agent or tourist info.
I would say the Garmin Topo maps are the best way to go if you like it simple.
Otherwise use Oziexplorer or ttmaps (for Tomtom)

    No chance!
You can buy some digital maps and print them out ,but what's point?
You can't put a detailed map on a A4 piece of paper and stitch it together...
Either you have to buy a decent GPS solution or buy normal paper maps...

i just want detailed maps on my computer screen
a guy at work has a program called Memory-Map and showed me an a4 print out of an area he went walking, was pretty good too.
and whats wrong with printing an a4 size map of the area you are going to?

    For personally :
    1. A4 is only big enough for hiking or maybe to check what is around
    2. A printed map can be complete crap if it is raining as the normal paper gets too soft and the ink can wash out (depending on what you use of course)
    3. detail level : a hiking map in 1:25000 won't cover a suitable area and in 1:50000 it is no good for hiking anymore

But that is only a personal opinion here - so not binding for everyone!
On top of the obious a hand held GPS gan assist in emergencies too as you can give very accurate Long. and Lat. info - so problems to find you.
You can record your track and put in on Google Earth for your frieds to see
Even if you are in an area without any tracks you will always get the correct directions and know your exact position.

I could go on ,but I think you get the point....
I understand that some people prefer a printed map ,but hey we are in the year 2010
And by the way with the registered Version of GoogleOzi you can get fairly detailed map of any area in the world and as they are saved as images you can print them or combine them to larger maps as you wish - all you need is OziExploerr or a good stitching software

Some more info for your link would be nice
    Maybe something like this :
The Rasterbator creates huge, rasterized images from any picture. Upload an image, print the resulting multi-page pdf file and assemble the pages into extremely cool looking poster up to 20 meters in size.
    and more info.

Bur I'm not convinced that it is really a good solution for maps ,have you tried it on some maps?

I just tried to upload maps I use on OziCE.

It's a 1.6gb RAR file and megaupload was going to take just under 18 hours to complete, hence I cancelled.

What happened to the "Upload your files to MEGAUPLOAD" in quick reply, it ain't there?

It is there ,but maybe you blocked it ? With something like Ad block ,flash block or so ?
But I think the limit is 200mb anyway.
Maybe is more effective for you !?

i downloaded Memory Map and got all the Tassie maps off the guy at work, excellent detail
but yea will definetly still buy a couple more good paper maps anyway, going to the highlands in a couple of weeks and want to know where we are. i do know where i will be but having a map makes it more adventurous
theres a Tassie map for the program thats 2.5gig, its kind of like having a gigantic 1:25,000 map open in front of you

This map would be intersting for the use in ttmaps or OziExplorer.
Do you know the format of these maps and if there is calibration data included?
