    Default Best EBAY/Cheap GPS

Am looking at buying a Cheap GPS for no other reason than getting a feel for the whole GPS thing.

    Must have:
    spoken instructions
    speed cameras etc
    run Windows CE
    OZ maps of course
and the ability to connect to rear view camera.

Have googled various sites and checked out E Bay listings, however they don't tell you the down side of there various offerings. Also going to Bali soon and would like it to operate over there, (have a down load that is called Bali.rar which loads in my nephews Garmin, is there anything better available for this area).

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    Sparky

    PS

Am getting a little older so a clear screen would also help.

How about you do some research yourself?
This question in one form or the other comes at least twice a month!
We are here to help ,but please decide what you want and buy it ...

Are you afraid to get lost between the pool and the beach?
From personal experience I can say the best and cheapest way to get around there is with a local :
I asked nicely at the hotel for a local driver to show me the island and they called someone in - i paid 100$US for two weeks and he was driving us everywhere.
Most areas you will never find without a local and 100$ is almost a year worth of hard work for most of them ,so they are really keen on helping you out.

    Look for something with
    CPU 400mhz
128 ram better for TTS than 64mg
    WinCE 5
Then you can pretty much run anything iGO is best

Got to be careful otherwise i will be flamed or considered a smart arse, but having googled ,searched and gone through a myriad of posts and suggestions there appears to be no consensus on which is the best unit currently available.
Maybe because i came out of the shallow end of the gene pool or some other reason, I cant find a reasonably current post that answers this question. Sorry to trouble you.
Put me on your ignore list.

Opps not meant for you Jaz808

Thanks for your help, was looking at that unit among others.
I shall burn an incense stick in a temple in Bali and pray for you to receive good luck and wealth always.

    Jaz808

    Thanks also.

I am sure you are a terrific bloke and reading through a myriad of posts here i can see you have helped quite a few people, but truly mate I did search, as the U2 song goes "I still hadn't found what I was looking for". Used to frequent the Sat forum on here and I know why people get pissed off by newbie posters who don't do any research first.
Also cabbies in Bali are nice blokes but they almost universally take you to every bag, watch, tee shirt and camera shop on the way, not to mention there uncle who owns a restaurant or bar.

    regards

    Sparky.

    PS
hollowman , how long did that unit take to reach you

Hehehe ... and there in lies the problem because there never will be a consensus. If this thread gets a heap of replies it will also get a heap of different recommendations

Its no biggee tho... Here is what we did recently at a 4WD Club. One of the members bought a Unit everyone else thought was pretty good so a heap of them ended up with one after a few months.

Now, it is the Unit we tell any newbs to buy. The advantage was that there was always someone who could sort it out for you and to get them started we even have copies of pre-loaded SD cards they can borrow so it is plug and play.

If you don't have a mate who has a GPS you like then pick any one of the common ones here or on another Forum and buy it. That way you will have heaps of help if you have problems.

I used to hang round the Sat Forums here for quite a few years as well. My old log-on died so I have re-invented meself.

I'm also looking for a portable GPS unit, about 4" WS and over.

I know a lot of people buy from ebay/china, but are there any good cheap units, available in shops around here, like JBhifi, bigw, etc.. for under $200 max, preferably under $150, also as one can bring the price down at some shops?

Just that I need one next few days, so I'd rather get locally, especially if they are only slightly dearer than china imports, and roughly same quality.

    Thanks.

I decided to buy one of these
As it has a faster processor and more memory than my current one. Don't worry that there made in China as donkey years ago everyone thought japanese products were poor quality but look at them now.

Yeh, I'm ok with them, I was just curious if there are similar ones (run any maps off sdcard) in places like JB, because I wanted to get one today/tomorrow, and not wait for delivery, plus they reduce price enough to make them cheap.

that one seems to have better specs than the other one from DX, is that the case, plus is it really only 30days warrant?

And would these units run those maps I see that look like you're driving on the road, some even have real photos, are these capable of loading them?

    thanks again

(If no one has bought a cheap unit locally before, they can recommend, I might just get that ebay one )

well I wasn't talking about those no-brand eBay models, I was referring to cheap brand name models, that are found locally in aus, you know like those ones in jb,bigw etc....not Chinese eBay, but also not tomtom, somewhere in between

hmm, not sure, got a catalog in the mail months ago, and it had a gps model in there, and it showed real photos of the streets, garmin I think?
Unless it was a deceptive type ad, to get you into the store never really checked it out, so I just assume it was what they said it was!

I must admit, i have no real need for a GPS, i was a good Boy Scout and can find my way anywhere with a good old fashioned map, it also doesn't need batteries or power to run.

BUT... the good work of Hollowman and reading some of his threads, has me thinking of buying one, just for the fun/learning curve of the whole thing.
Being able to muck with it, customise it etc etc
And it was him alone that even brought these cheap Chinese things to my attention in the first place.

So like the OP here.... I think it's a fair enough question, even if these GPS boys hear it all too often.
I for one am grateful to hear what you experts think, before i jump in with my hard earned.
It's always nice to get a little point in the right direction or least be told what to steer away from... not hard

There seems to be a lot of similar Chinese models... i have followed the threads here and even read some horror story's.
That is the risk you take buying rubbish from China though

Deal Extreme is a good site to buy items such as cheapy GPS from because :

    1. They ship to you FREE

    2. They allow feedback on their products that is attached to the description.

    Plenty to look at here

    Hollowman

Thank you very much for your suggestion and tutorial, I purchased the model you suggested and it arrived yesterday, complete with Amigo and AUS & US maps.
As per your tutorial I backed up everything and installed IGO
and Sensis map, couldn't believe it was driving round the block 1 hour later TTS and everything else works a treat.
Once again thanks for your help.

Well I ended up getting one of these yesterday, took only 9 days. This is a real good unit, slim neat looking and a good two way adjustable bracket. Very fast and accurate gps using iGO8 but version V8.3.4.102680.

Only problem i'm having is that I wanted to backup everything first before fiddling but can only backup the SD card. I can't access the GPS unit itself which has WIN CE6 on it. My computer's usb port will not recognise it.

Anyone know to get around this? My usb drivers are up todate and I can read the SD card while inserted in the unit so that connection must be ok.
