We had that question not only a week ago if I can remember correctly
Check the Nokia if the maps software is already available free of charge for your device.
Nokia is taking on the big players and their OVI Maps software is offered free - incl. pedestrian navigation and voice guided navigation.

If it is anything like the Google phone maps it will be useless when out of phone coverage area. I need something that will work anywhere at any time

Nokia maps only needs your GPS ,works fine even in the middle of the Otways without any reception ,tested it myself.
Why would you need phone coverage ? Just disable the assisted GPS thing and only use the inbuilt GPS.

    Nope!!
I don't need phone reception for any GPS ,GPS works with satellites...
The only thing that could need the phone reception is A-GPS (assisted GPS) that gives you your position without waiting till the GPS has found satellites.

How do you think I was able to use it in the middle of the Otways ?
And I checked : th N97 is fully supported for the free offer!

I'm using my N95 sometimes to find the best way out of a National park or forest because the Nokia maps have most 4wd tracks included - TT still has only the major ones that are still listed as "road".
Same when I'm walking in the city and need to find an address ,TT only has a few walking streets ,Nokia even the tiny ones in between the city blocks - the ones where you would not walk at night time
