Unhappy unknown brand all in one chinese gps unit wont start gps

    G'day all,

I bought a 2nd hand 2din dvd gps tv radio multimedia player etc off a friend cheap for $50.00 as he got it off ebay, but the dvd player part never worked, so he never installed it as he said it wasn't worth the hassle and price of sending it back to china and waiting for it to be fixed. Anyway I thought I would have a look at it and see if I can get the dvd part going. Even if I couldn't, I could still use the gps, or so I thought. He lost the gps sd card so I tried looking for gps software online, but at first didn't find any. But I found a firmware upgrade patch, but after using it the unit just hangs on the gps part.

To be honest I dont know what os it uses or cpu, but I think I saw before it stopped working that it has 32mb internal memory. Its a 7in screen, but I dont know the resolution.

I've tried downloading firmware upgrades and putting them onto an sd card, but unit doesn't seem to recognise the card or doesn't like whats on it and does nothing.

    This is the unit:

When it starts it shows this screen and the thick blue line starts off yellow and fills up to be all blue, but it just sits there and does nothing.

When you press the menu button it takes you to the following menu. It look very basic and plain. I'm hoping I can upgrade the firmware to have better and nicer menus etc.

    Any help would be appreciated,

i have to be honest with you, your pushing sh!t up hill lol.
are you able to select a exe file in the gps selection path ? if so i have tools that can give you more info etc...

upgrading the firmware to these units can be very difficult, not difficult to do, but difficult to find, these are cheap chinese units, those morons wont bother to make updates etc....

that gps screen is probebly hanging there as there is no GPS software on the card reader ? as i said above, have you selected a correct exe path ?

Since the initial attempted firmware update it doesn't give you the option to select the correct exe path.

hmmm i dont know man, if you can't even do that, then your only shot will be to contact the company it was purchased from and get some info from them, which you will only get 5% chance they will reply or even exist anymore... i would not loose your hair, just buy a new one

have you tried leaving it without power for a few days ?

if that doesn't work, try opening up the unit and see if there is battery inside, take it out

I'll have to ask my friend if he still knows where he got it from. I know its ebay, but the seller may not exist anymore. I have left it for up to 48 hours, but still the same. I will have to dismantle it to see if it has a battery inside. At the very least I can maybe use it for spare parts or sell it on ebay for spare parts.

yeah by the looks of it, the menu system looks extreamly old, which means the seller will not exist and i dont think there will be updates..... its just not worth the grey hair... sorry to say, but thats just my opinion.

unless anyone else here has a better opinion ???

Well after opening it up I was able to determine that it is an FW8700.

And on the GPS board is says FW6000, which must come from:

There was a small backup battery on the gps board, so I took it off and shorted the contacts to make sure all power is drained. I shorted the leads on a couple of large capacitors also.

Now I just have to see if I can find the firmware somewhere.

Google is probably your best friend on this one. Do some googling and send off emails to any dealer or seller that you come across and hopefully someone sends you the firmware.

Time to buy a knew one. I think I killed the gps board by accidently shorting something out when it was on and now the gps function is just a black screen. You can select radio etc with the remote, however the touchscreen doesn't work. When you disconnect the gps board the touchscreen and other functions work again.

For $50.00 is was a not too great a loss and I've learnt some valuable lessons for next time (have backups, firmware etc before I try something). Perhaps I'll buy one that has what I need at the start.

I'm looking at some on ChinaVasion. Are they ligit and trustworthy?
