Dunno why anyone would be surprised...
He was taken window shopping and decided to partake of the goods on offer. Good sound government policy Victorian ALP style.

The fact that there's a highway to hell and a stairway to heaven says a lot about the anticipated traffic flow.
at least they included a photo, that should help with leads, and at least you can keep an eye out!
off to the toilet, how DUMB are these guards...
When I explained to the guy what avatar I wanted, that wasn't what I meant!
How was the length of the original sentence...........then the pathetic couple of months added for escaping.....
No wonder we all get so frustrated.......with the legal system...
I dont see what the current Govt in power has to do with it.
Ive seen first hand guards escorting a prisoner from the Thomas Embling forensic prison Hospital to a funeral and i can tell you they shadow the prisoner everywhere, even watching over everybody comming within reach of them.
The guards there and the security in place is seriously good, they had 6 guards for 1 prisoner and watching them i saw how well they worked as a team, small hand and eye gestures, giving the prisoner an opportunity to pay their last respects but be constantly in a controlled environment.
My guess is it was guards from Ararat prison who got too comfortable and let their guard down.
It would not take a prisoner much to build some trust in the guards over years and take advantage of it at the right given opportunity.
Unacceptable.
He is a Child Sex Offender, part of his trade is deception and slipperiness (no pun intended), he just used some of what he has learnt on the guards.
The guy is in need of serious help, but is most likely too late in his life for help.
So lock em up... and at the first opportunity they will try and escape.
Perhaps they should tie them to a guard via a 20meter steel cable on these types of release days
This is the second time he has done this.
You would think they would have learn't the first time

Bingo, the only logical answer.
Unfortunately when on day release even a low lying Child sex offender is made to blend into the community to avoid worrying the public or heaven forbid offend the prisoner.
Even in the case that i saw, those who did not know that the person was a prisoner thought they were being protected and surrounded by body guards, little did they know a crime had been committed and they were out on day release due to compassionate grounds.

Oh yeah, good point mate, i didn't even consider the fright that would give the public.
Hard issues to solve... remote operated tazar?
Like someone had already mentioned, if he has escaped once before, you'd think that would be in the forefront of their minds whilst guarding him.... nice to know the kids were safe

Im surprised that knowing he had escaped before that they let their guard down.
With high risk offenders they should never be allowed out of sight, never be allowed in public places and simply be hand cuffed with a tether to an officer when going to a toilet.
Food can be bought through a drive through and eaten in the car away from the public.
The Cafe's in Station St are pretty up market too, geez they get treated well, i have to save up to eat out there. LOL
So he didn't like the restrictive prison conditions in Victoria.
If he can make it to Qld they'll set him up in community accommodation, at least until the local residents find out and give him a hard time, The thoughtless bastards.
But don't worry, The NSW government will gladly take him off their hands and give him a Housing Commission flat to call his own, where he can indulge his Kiddy Fiddling fancies to his hearts content.
I do...A child sex offender who has escaped before is let out on day release to go window shopping. The government of the day has a duty to its citizens not to have laws in place that allow this. But then again this is the Rob Hulls legal system isn't it.
As long as people are willing to absolve politicians of all responsibility we will get poor governance and siuations like this will continue.

Could have been worse: They could have stopped at McDonalds and the creep would be enjoying all the Junior Burgers he can handle by now.

172cm and 64kg - I reckon I'd be very confident approaching him
When I was a kid, I used to have an imaginary friend. I thought he went everywhere with me. I could talk to him and he could hear me, and he could grant me wishes and stuff too. But then I grew up, and stopped going to church.
