    Default Dvd Ram ???

    Hi all,

Someone gave me a Pansonic DVD RAM disc - 120mins (4.7GB), and I am a bit unsure as to its use.

Is it like any other recordable DVD and if so why the RAM ????

    Thanks in advance

Lg and a few others can burn Ram, alot of home standalone dvd burners use Ram, very similar to a RW can be writen on and over 10,000 times

These RAM discs are supposed to have a very long lifetime - for archiving important data etc. I filled such a disc a few years ago with MP3 and some large dot zip files to see how they go in 10 years....if I last that long. I have some double-sided PANASONICs, but I have to remove the actual disc from the caddy to use them.

I use a RAM disc in my PANASONIC HDD/DVD/DVB-T box which has been used maybe 100 times with no apparent errors. The only hassle is the slow write speed. I have some other re-writable DVDs which have shown errors (skipping) when written-formatted-written only 20 times, so it would seem the RAM discs are better from this aspect.

I reckon they are also harder to physically scratch than the TDK re-writables which have problems.

You can format them and use them as a (slow) extra drive, as in drag/drop/delete and even defrag them....a bit slow and useless when you can obtain a 4GB USB thumb drive for $40 or less.

The data surface is pretty to look at ! .

    Hi Guys,

Thank you very much for your responses, I had never struck them before, but will now put it to good use.

Your last point is very valid Bulbous, thumb dives are heaps easier.

    Cheers
