Default Upgrade from XP SP2 to XP SP2

Now I'm really confused, mind you it's not hard to confuse me, I've had a problem with a new computer regarding non boot of audio, discussed in previous threads.
In chasing the problem I decided to run a "repair" install of XP to see if it would help.

The install didn't offer me the repair function as it usually does but a recommended "Upgrade" function.

I ran the "upgrade" and updates and reinstalled all drivers, now all appears well even with numerous restarts & shutdowns I haven't yet lost audio. Here's hoping.

But the thing I don't understand is how I upgraded from XP SP2 to XP SP2.
It was my thought that the upgrade would only be offered when a previous version of windows was detected.

The box came pre installed with XP SP2.

Can someone explain this one, someone, anyone, please.

And yes it said upgrade not update

Well this XP never ceases to amaze me. I am told by those who should know that the upgrade was offered because the XP install disk detected an incomplete installation of Windows. Huh, I have been using this computer since October.
Admittedly I have had a nagging audio problem which now looks to be fixed (fingers crossed) since the upgrade but in all other respects it has worked fine even though I didn't understand some of the newer features. I can only presume that since the system came from the supplier with XP preloaded something I have done (installed or uninstalled) has altered the Windows installation at the time that I first noticed the missing audio problem (if that is possible) although I am at a loss to know what. Why didn't I do this repair/upgrade much sooner I hear you ask.
I wasn't prepared to place an extremely large video editing project that was on the system until recently in jeopardy.

I would appreciate any input from those with much more XP experience that myself.

    Vista is looking good ATM

    Tearing hair out now.
Missing audio problem re-occurred on boot this morning.
    Where to go now
So far replaced mainboard, bios, speakers, drivers and O/S.
Only ram, chip and power supply left.

Good grief man, your only pulling your hair out, the unit would have gone through my office window by now.

This is only an idea, but I seem to remember a mate of mine having a similar problem some time ago.

It appears that as part and parcel of Microsoft's ongoing upgrades some computers with on on board REALTEK sound options have installed at some point after the SP2 upgrade a 'High Definition Audio' driver.
This driver caused problems on my mates computer because he
    1. Hadn't updated his BIOS to the latest BIOS, and
    2. Had Automatic updates set to active on his computer, so every time he thought he had fixed the problem, the next morning it was back.

I now go through the Microsoft Windows Update page and edit whats available and mark those items I never want to receive so that I never even see them.

I'm not saying this is the culprit in your case, but perhaps it might be another avenue to explore - before the box does go through your office window

i just did a clean install with sp3 in it.
couldnt get the realtek audio going after install.
ended up using a ms uaa bus driver for high def audio.
this fixed my realtek audio? who knows but it worked.

    wind\sysytem32\ hdaudbus.sys

Has latest MS Bus driver for HD Audio and latest available bios installed.

Unit fails to detect 5.1 speaker system although drivers appear all good.

Does not happen on every boot.

Unit back to supplier this morning (local) for assessment. They are onside and willing to help but so far as much in the dark as me.

You still need to install the Realtek driver which is common for all boards.

Its along the same line lines as what Maxwell was saying.

Unit is currently at supplier's receiving new HDD and clean install of Windows, system drivers, and Windows Updates in order to test it. ("Old" HDD retained intact) When I get it back I will progressively install all software that was on it before to see if the problem returns. If it returns we know it's hardware related in the items that haven't yet been changed out. If it doesn't fail then I have a new HDD and life goes on. Works for me

Would definitely recommend that you get some disk imaging software and take a snapshot/image of the working hard drive before you install anything so if worse comes to worse you can reimage with the clean image and start again. If you have the space you could do incremental imaging (everytime you make a change , take an image) so you can rollback to the previous working environment if an install fails. There is also some installation tools to look at that will make pre and post installation snapshots of the system when installing software and again if it fails, roll back ......

    Hope that helps.

Well that went well, new HDD, clean install of windows, all appropriate drivers, no Windows Updates and no applications installed.
Audio failed on very first boot, and second boot but I got it on the third whoopee.
At least I wont have to laborously install all my apps on the new HDD, just reinstall original HDD and grin an bear it

plan b would be to upgrade with a pci soundcard and thus get:
    1) better overall quality of sound
    2) less grief over mobo related onboard driver issues

a second hand audigy will be ~$30
or a lovely m-audio would make you appreciate how crap onboard sound is

as an aside, any comment on sp3 ?
what "enhancements to the experience" does it provide ?
or is it just more lock-in to the m$ way ?

Do people actually still use IE6 or 7? I thought those in the know all used Firefox now. Firefox vs IE should be the subject of a separate thread so I won't go on. I must agree with previous posters that turning off Windows Auto Update seems like a really good idea. I was getting regular updates until M$ decided they wanted to send me Windows Genuine Advantage just to make sure I was getting everything I was entitled to. No thanks to that can of worms and its constant messages!

If you try and repair windows from the graphical interface then you won't always get the desired result.

BOOT from the CD and run a repair.

That then gets rid of all the updates and you are cookin' with gas.

Now back on original installation and so far hasn't missed a beat. Difference is now when I shut computer down I leave the 6 channel speakers hot, seems to work every time doing it this way, but then I have said that before haven't I?
