Just ask for the rego papers and their license, its how i check them.
The real owner should have no problem providing proof of ownership, the last car i bought a few weeks ago i made the owner go to vicroads and get proof of ownership as he lost his rego papers and his license had expired.
For proof of who he was he produced his passport.
Also pay by bank cheque, transfer the ownership straight away before the cheque can clear in case you need to cancel it.

the guy is adverising the car from Brissie , but currently has it in WA on a military base , he reckons he can send it back at no cost to me , but it stops me actually seeing the car first
I told him that if I did buy it I would pay via direct deposit but would not allow the funds to be released until the car arrived and I could inspect it .
I just want to cover my arse from being ripped off if I do buy
any other advice there mate ?
Vicroads offer a vehicle register check (ownership, financial, etc) but that doesn't help if the vehicle is registered in QLD.
I'd suggest contacting the QLD Department Of Transport & Main Roads.
Contact details here:
They should have all the details.
I wouldnt be touching it.
There are scams galore at the moment with people being ripped off over cars.
exactly , that is why I want all this shit , I have asked him for VIN numbers etc so I can doa REVS search , will also ask him for a scan of his drivers licence .
I have bought cars unseen before , but I want to be extra careful as I am broke lol
Whirlpool forums has had numerous threads lately about people getting ripped on carsales, I'll see if I can dig some up ( shocking site to find anything ).
I'd avoid it like the plague. Anyone with photoshop skills can doctor a licence scan.
If you're determined to go ahead, do some due diligence. He says he's on a military base, get the phone number of his unit orderly room or whatever they call it now, and check with someone there. Check the number on mirusonline or similar to see if it's genuine.
Or you might be able to get someone else here to look at the car and confirm it's genuine..
Yeah, what you posted looks right.
Just dont hand over a cent till you have seen it, here in Vic we pay a few $ to get in writing if any money is owing on the car or if its stolen through vic roads. The paper can be used as cover against fraud.
In QLD its called a vcheck.
If the car is registered in WA you will need to go to the WA site.
When you see the car get the Vin and engine number, also get the rego and check its background. All numbers need to match.
One car i put a deposit on a month ago turned out to be a repaired write off, luckily a call to the bank put a stop to the cheque.
Have a read here.
Thats some recent ones, some apply to sellers some buyers. One things for sure there are some scamming scum out there.
This one is a good read.
A guy on an auto forum gets his car stolen and forum members unite to catch the arsehole.
Ah i remember the Lobster claw thief from a few years ago.

just popped into the local cop shop and they gave me some info , the make and model shows up fine , the stolen vehicle check shows up fine , but name I got and the registered owners name are not the same .they also said once I get the VIN numbers (if i get them) to bring them down and they will do the rest of the stuff for me for free if it is a scam at least i can let the cops know about it .
they also told me that there is a scam going on at the moment they tell you they are on oil rigs in WA
Sounds a little like this link posted by Sanity then.
Of course, if you're unscrupulous there are ways to turn the overpayment and send-right-away scams to your own advantage....
It sounds too suss to me. Maybe I am paranoid but I wouldnt take the risk.
The story itself invokes some suspicion, the owners name given to you and the registered owners name dont match. Presuming it is the car you mention in the Auto forum, its a 99 model Subaru Outback ? With an average price range of around 8K, he is also going to ship it from WA to QLD free of charge ?? A mate recently had a car delivered from Sydney to Melbourne and it was $1000. I would hate to imagine frieght charges from WA to QLD.
You might want him to send some current pics of the top of the vechicle there are thousands of Hail Damaged ones from the last storm in Perth

I think it is dodgey
bottom redbook price for these things is about right
if he is in the defence force it should be no problems to have the car shipped back
but he has not answered any emails since last night , so be being suss about it is a pretty good call .
like they say if it sounds too good to be true lol
luckily I am not the type of person to be sucked into this type of thing .
if I do not hear anything I will post all details I have up so everyone can be aware of the situation and the name he goes by , will not do it until I am 100% satisified he is a rip
but yeah hopefully string along a bit see what happens as the cops already know
hahahaha, THE ARMY.
remember the bloke selling computers and laptops, he was in the army, and how many got money back that they lost to him.
forget it mr chippy, as you cant do nothing to blokes in the army, as a lot of ppl from here and other forums found out.
maybe its him selling cars this time.
