    Default Ultrasonic dog repeller

hi guys , ive got a sensitive problem with one of my neighbours . he thinks its perfectly acceptable to own a large vicous bitzer of a dog that barks its head off each time somebody walks past his house.
i prefer to keep the peace and i'm too gutless to approach him directly about it. hes the sort of person who would get another one in spite and i cannot afford to move.

ive seen ultrasonic dog repellers on ebay , do you know if they work or are they just a gimmick? my theory is to keep one in my pocket and activate it whenever this offensive dog barks. i dont know how close i have to be or whether it will work through a paling fence.

any ideas / comments? any other humane ways of dealing with it?

I bought one from ebay for similiar problem, all I can say is it seems to work on some dogs but not others, my poor miniature tenterfield hits the roof when I click it but my rhodesian ridgeback just looks at me like (your kidding! right) so it could be hit or miss.

EDIT: sorry just remembered I got mine from Dick Smiths not ebay.

Buy a dog whistle, a metal one not the plastic ones.

Or feed the dog laxettes .. every time it barks it will shit itself.

Yeah the neighbour across the road from my place has a bitzer as well. I thinks its the guard dog for the crop he's got going. Damn thing barks at anything even shadows it's that bad sometimes. Good luck trying to stop it barking as I haven't found a way to stop this one yet.

thanks , so it has an effective range of 6m , i could use that.
whiteox , i'll investigate the whistle idea , but i need to use a device covertly if possible.
dont wanna upset my own dog either so a more targeted device may be better,

A few years ago Silicon Chip magazine ran a kit called Woofer Stopper and MK2 version. It used PA amp tweeters etc. That might be worth looking at have, the speakers hidden and facing the direction of the offending backyard and everytime the dog barks set it going.

Also found this link pdf if you wan't to make one

I believe the electronic bark stoppers have more success on larger size dogs, i'm told the smaller dogs are not affected that much.

The metal dog whistles have an adjustment screw on them, you can fiddle with the screw to adjust the pitch so as to not bother your own dog.

I'll see if I can find the link again.

theres a dog whistle app for iphone thats works ok, you can alter the frequency and so effect different dogs.

Whiteox, those can be very effective, just adjust the frequency for best affect, then amplify... a little or alot, till it gives the desired result, you dont care you cant hear it!

Word of warning, make sure you use a very directional horn twetter and dont just leave going, run from a 555 timer circuit that only allows the unit to 5sec burst, as may DAMAGE the poochy
When I explained to the guy what avatar I wanted, that wasn't what I meant!

Hi Tradesman, YES, a dog repeller WILL solve your problem, BUT you must buy carefully, and set up the repeller properly. I've bought a dozen of there units ranging from about $US 19 to $US 125, and only one "works" well. It is a unit called a "Yard Guard" and is, roughly $US 50 or so. However, altho the vendor says "humans cant hear it," BUNK! It has a problem common with all similar units I've tried. The electronics are CHEAP, and altho you may adjust the frequency dial to, say, the low or hi end of the dog hearing range, between 20 and 25 KHz, these boxes put out spurs of sound across a wide frequency range, some are WELL down in the human range. When you set up your box, have a child or a woman, with GOOD hearing, stand about 10 to 20 feet from it and LISTEN. If they hear it, tweak the setting up/down slightly and try to find a setting in the dog range that CAN'T be heard in the human range. If you set the box RIGHT it will frighten the dog, but only if it is not old and deaf, and not disturb humans. E-mail me if you need more info. Linda...

whenit arrives i'll do some experimenting , although i may not need to now.
things in the street got colourful last saturday. said neighbour takes his nasty dog for a walk and it breaks free of its lead and runs away. hope it doesnt come back. i also hope it doesnt bite anybody.

    I prefer hypersonic dog repellents.
I've not encountered a situation where the neighbours dogs have warranted some of the slower and more extreme methods of bark busting like dark chocolate or aspirin.

i hope it doesnt come back , i was too worried for my own animals.

i noticed a couple of times now - the dumber the dog owner , the more aggressive the breed of dog.

We''ll one of my mates, borrowed my block and tackle ,he didn't returned it for a while, wondering why he kept it..I later found out, apart from lifting engines he tied his German Sheperd's leash onto the tackle to stop it from jumping over the fence and barking..Lol!!!

Just wondering if anyone has the build instructions for the Woofer Stopper Mk2 described above (or a copy of Feb 96 Silicone Chip that they wouldn't mind scanning the article). I have one of these and was thinking of connecting it in conjunction with the car horn via another on off switch to try it as a Roo Shooer. I built it ages ago and can't remember which piezo speaker it used or what the function of the 5 position switch is. There is also a procedure for temporarily fitting a resistor somewhere in the circuit when you are testing it to lower the O/P freq so it is audible.
Would really appreciate anyone who is able to help with this
    Cheers Bob
