Hakko iron

Hi all

In the market for a new soldering iron. Has anyone got one of the new Hakko FX-888s?



Wondering if anyone had any experience with them yet.

In case you haven't looked at any other irons; I use Goot.



Pretty good quality and i use the Goot sucker



Had them for yonks and never let me down.

I was also looking at the Hakko irons and have decided on either the FX-888 or FX-951...

Anybody with a WES trade account care to PM me a price for these?? Or does anybody know of a Hakko dealer besides Farnell and RS?? Both these seem to charge a fair bit extra

Have any contacts in Taiwan? Go to ebay homepage and click on the ebay Taiwan link down the bottom. I cant understand the lingo but you can see the search box - type in FX-888 and you will see all the listings for around 120 Aussie dollars. Not sure what their mains voltage is over there and my attemps at contact have come to nothing. Funny that

Have been using Hakko soldering/desoldering equipment for over 20 years and always loved it , over the last 2 years I upgraded to the Metcal MX5000 series which is like nothing else on the market , I solder and desolder all day and this system ( soldering Iron ) is incredible , it auto senses the temperature needed for any joint , any size , leaded or lead free instantly.
The iron and tip can be used for reflowing SMD components to large double plated gnd plains without adjusting anything , it truly has to be seen to be believed how amazing these things are.
Not cheap but worth every cent.

I've got a Hakko FX 888 at work but don't get to use it as much as I would like.
I've only had it since November and it feels good in the hand. No problems with it at all.
I got mine through Farnell(when they were still Farnell) but we get a good discount(including 20% for educational).

Let me know if you are still after a WES price as I still have my personal account with them.

+1 to the Metcal MX5000 series. I also have this same unit and as Joey said, they are not cheap, but they handle everything you can throw at them with ease. They have a choice of hand pieces available and a huge range of tips which are hot changeable on the fly making moving from small fine jobs to large scale boards with ease. There are also a lot of smd tips for soj, sop, plcc, qfp chips available and they are quite reasonably priced.
