Default Dreambox DM-7020 - Hard Drive

    hi guys...
i just got a dm7020... got an issue with the HDD... I've got an old 40gb 5400rpm drive sitting around... I plugged it into the Dreambox, but the box wont detect it... when i goto hard drive settings (specific), it says no HDD found... I've tried changing the jumper to cable select, master etc... nothing is working...

I also have a 120GB 7200rpm drive, which is also being rejected by the Dreambox 7020... I have formatted the drive to NTFS and is working fine on the computer.... I have also tried the capacitors on this... 4700uf 25v from Jaycar...

I am using Pli Iolite 2008...

    please helppp!!!!!

... not sure what make of drives you are using ... but some of them draw lots of power (0.8A) ... which the 7020 may not have enough to operate the drive so controler recognizes it ...

... you want to find a 'low power' drive ... (0.5A or lower)

... one quick test is to get a 2.5" drive and a 2.5 to 3.5 cable converter ...

... the notebook drives run with smaller poer requirement ... if it works with a notebook drive then its most certainly a power issue ...

The drive in my dm7020 uses the same power as yours and work fine in pli.

I'm using an old Segate 40G and have no issues appart from it's fooking noisy!! I just bought a 3.5" to 2.5" adapter so I can plug in a laptop drive I have. It should be heaps quieter then.

.. does you drive 'spin-up' ? ... or is it just 'quiet' ?

... if it 'spins-up' then its unlikely that the power is the issue ... the power surge is in the 'spin-up' phase - so once its running the DM should be able to 'see' the drive ...

... as a quick test you need to verify if the DM electronics is at fault or you have a 'bad' image ...

... one way is to try a new image other that the one you got - just in case ... don't bother setting up everything ... just check if it 'sees' the drive first ... if it does ... then you know its an image problem and not your DM ...

I run a 400 gig Samsung in mine , which is an original not clone.
As others appear to be running all sorts of drives , the fact thats its a clone shouldnt make any difference. I am running a Gemini image.

Any problem with the cable between the HD and Box ? Its strange that its not recognising it at all.

Mate, i have run lots of drives in mine, 160gig 5400, 250gig 7200, 320gig 7200, all without the Cap Mod and all with no problems at all.
In fact email DMM themselves Re: HDD came back with a use what ever you want answer, as the DM7020 has a seperate PSU and doesn't suffer the same issues as the DM7000. In saying that, i agree with you following some warnings and using the Cap Mod, it will play NO ROLE in helping your DM7020 see the HDD though, it is purely there to take the start up spike current rush out.

Your problem is one i have never heard of before, and as such, start looking at the really simple things. Is your IDE cable ok? Power cable ok? Correctly plugged in? Use a multimeter when plugged in to see if it is getting power? Does it spin at all?

Silly question but you do have the IDE cable around the right way, yes?

Set it up as a slave, the CF slot may have become the master IDE drive.

    Wow!
thanks for the replies... u know i love u all

I have tried to put it in as slave, master, cable select

I have tried a different power cable, also tried running fan off 12v and 5v, fan works fine... IDE cable, tried about 3-4 already, no help...

HDD makes no noise when i power on the dreambox, that is worrying me because I thought it should be just like the computer it should spin when you switch it on...

Does the HDD need to be FAT/FAT32?? It is curently formatted as NTFS.

does anyone know anything about the jumper j80 right next to the IDE on the mobo? does that have anything to do with it?

I am going to try plugging in the hdd for the last time, if not I will try installing a new image see if that helps...

Doesn't matter what format it is in, because you are going to change it anyway when you format and mount it yes?

The fact that it doesn't spin up on booting is worrysome though...... If it were me, i'd be checking for power at the end of the power lead now. You may aswell start to rule things out

    Turns out:
the power supply isnt pushing out enough power to powerup the hdd.... tried many hdd's and stupidly friend my 120gb seagate (long story)....
I plugged in the power from my pc, switched on pc, 10 secs later switched on the dreambox, tada!! its working hdd detected... formatted it and running fine on pc power...

any easy fixes? i dont particularly want to touch the 240v stuff... hmmmm...
