a 3d bluray player need to be able to play a resolution of 3840(1920* 2) by 1080 or 1920 by 2160 (1080 * 2) so when the 2 veiws are combined you get a full hd (1920 * 1080) picture, the info is on the disc but normal bluray players cant handle the resolution of full hd 3d. now if the picture is half that basically (2*960)*1080 (which is what they call side by side) then the bluray player is not needed and the tv will do it all for you.
so if you wanted to play 3d off a normal bluray player you would have to convert the 3d bluray to side by side then burn to bluray, but you will loose half the resolution. The broadcasted 3d is half resolution.
